SHISHKIN came roaring back to success with a memorable victory in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase. The Nicky Henderson trained 9-year-old had looked a shadow of his former self in his last two starts, but produced arguably the best performance of his career to win by 16 lengths.
Henderson Relieved
An emotional Nicky Henderson described it as more “relief” than anything as his stable star showed that the fires still burn in uncertain terms. Bookmakers reacted by cutting him to a best priced 6/4f to win the Ryanair Chase - a contest which looks there for the taking.
He is as short as 8/1 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but it looks very unlikely that he would go down that route - but didn’t completely rule it out, describing the idea of a Gold Cup bid as “stupid” but adding that “I’ve done stupid things before.”
All in all, if he can bring that form to the table in a Ryanair Chase in three weeks time he will be banker material - and will very likely start odds on.
Antepost Armchair followers will be keen to see 8/1 Mares’ Hurdle tip Brandy Love not make a mess of her assignment at Punchestown on Wednesday which has ‘banana skin’ written all over it. On the other hand, an emphatic display would see her price tumble for the main event at Cheltenham next month. Fingers crossed for a bold show from the Willie Mullins trained mare.
Turners Novice Chase - Banbridge
The Turners Chase is a race I am yet to get involved in - so let’s get involved!
Mighty Potter has been excellent this season and is ticking all the right boxes, but his price has evaporated, and bearing in mind he bombed out in the Supreme last season that has to be a small worry.
BANBRIDGE loves spring ground and loves Cheltenham - winning both his starts at Prestbury Park, including at the Festival last year. He has the option of the Arkle too, but would surely only head there if we got deep ground at the Festival.
Joseph O’Brien has nominated this as the most likely target and I can see him getting a lot closer to Mighty Potter in the rematch at the Cheltenham Festival. The race is likely to cut up into a very small field, and I would be shocked if he was anywhere near the price on the day.
Bring it on!
