Ed Quigley’s Ante-Post Armchair for Tuesday 31st January

Ed has a big odds fancy for the Coral Cup at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival

The thrills and spills of Cheltenham’s Trials Day are out of the way, and it is on to The Dublin Racing Festival. This weekend sees two days of top-class action at Leopardstown which make for essential viewing.

It is a bit of a who’s who of equine superstars with the likes of Facile Vega and Galopin Des Champs getting ready to land huge prizes en route to the Cheltenham Festival. Naturally this weekend will have a huge bearing on the Ante Post markets for the Cheltenham Festival, so it will be fascinating to look back at the movers and shakers in the aftermath, and hopefully spot some more antepost value.

1.20pm Leopardstown (Saturday)

The opening race of the meeting comes up at 1.20 on Saturday and sees my two Antepost fancies for the Albert Bartlett potentially locking horns, as Weveallbeencaught and Sandor Clegane are due to line up in the Grade 1 Novice Hurdle over 2m6f.

Fingers crossed they can both run nice races and dreams will be intact for success at Prestbury Park six weeks today.

2023 Coral Cup (March 15th)

As for adding other Antepost wagers to the portfolio, I am getting stuck in again with an old friend from last year’s Festival. CAMPROND ran an absolute stormer in last year’s Coral Cup, finishing fourth.

Connections would have looked at the rain clouds gathering on that Wednesday morning, and stared in disbelief. Camprond enjoys spring ground, and got totally undone by the testing underfoot conditions that materialised.

Ed thinks Camprond could be a big player in the Coral Cup

Camprond went on to bolt up at the Punchestown Festival, but this season hasn’t really got going for him.

It would be fair to say that chasing was a disaster for him, and he hasn’t had a great deal of luck since returning to the smaller obstacles, having been brought down at the second hurdle in the Lanzarote, and then trailing home a well beaten 12th of 15th at Cheltenham over the weekend. However, that was on unsuitable soft ground and over an inadequate trip and as a consequence has dropped down to 142.

If we can get a bit of dry and warm weather at the start of March, he has it in the locker to run a big race stepping back up in distance to his preferred C&D.

At 25/1 NRNB (’Non Runner No Bet’) I think he’s a major player, and I wouldn’t be shocked if shortened up significantly by the time the tapes go up if the ground has plenty of ‘Good’ in it.

It’s a mesmerising weekend of action en route - enjoy!
