Only 5 weeks to go to the Cheltenham Festival, and the excitement is building. The Dublin Racing Festival provided some huge upsets, and is often the way in racing - left us with more questions than answers.
The top level races have been dissected in great detail, but the one horse from this column who is really making my eyes light up is CAMPROND, who has been dropped to a mark of 138. With some spring ground and a sunny week in the build up to the Cheltenham Festival, I could see a real gamble emerging on the Philip Hobbs representative for the Coral Cup.
Kim Muir Handicap Chase, Cheltenham Festival
Looking at the Festival once more, the Kim Muir looks to have a wide open feel to it (as would be expected at this stage) but one horse who is having her whole campaign geared towards it is the Ben Pauling trained ANIGHTINLAMBOURN.
The mare was rated 104 when she won at Worcester in August, and since then her form has gone off the charts. She is now 31lb higher, but that should ensure she gets in the race. She has been given a break since winning at Cheltenham in November, and will come into this a fresh horse. In a market full of uncertain participants she looks fair value at 20/1 and goes into the antepost portfolio accordingly.
Betfair Hurdle (Newbury, Saturday)
In regards to more immediate affairs, it’s the Betfair Hurdle on Saturday at Newbury, and I like the claims of the Sam Thomas trained DEERE MARK here.
The Wales-based handler stated that he hoped that this horse would sneak in the bottom of the weights, and he has his wish, running off a mark of 125 and 10st 1lb. He looks to be improving, and is versatile in regards to underfoot conditions.
This well-bred sort from the family of Best Mate will benefit from a strongly run encounter and could easily be playing a part in the finish here, as I suspect we haven’t seen anything like the ceiling of this horse’s’ ability.
