Ed Quigley’s Weekend Watch for Saturday 25th June

Ed Quigley casts his eye over a fantastic weekend of horse racing action

LIONEL looks the each-way play in the Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday (3.45pm). The David Menusier team are in good form, and this individual showed real stamina and battling qualities to win at Goodwood last time out. There is a bit of rain forecast in the area, and if conditions do deteriorate under foot, then that will only enhance his claims. I think he could be capable of giving the protagonists something to think about with Jamie Spencer in the saddle.

Ed's Tip

3.45pm Curragh

Lionel looks a solid each-way bet with Jamie Spencer on board

At 10/1 a £10 bet would return £110

At Newcastle, I think GLEN SHIEL is the one to be on in the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes (2.25pm) He is a class act on his day, and could easily be revitalised by a return to this venue - a record of 3 wins and 2 placed efforts from just 5 starts at the track suggest this is a track that plays to his strengths. Hollie Doyle takes the ride for the Archie Watson stable.

In the Northumberland Plate (3.30pm) I like the claims of the Andrew Balding trained VALLEY FORGE. He is unexposed as a stayer, and needed every yard of his first attempt at 2m when winning at Haydock last time out. Off a mark of 93, I think there could be a lot more to come from last season’s Melrose winner.

3.30pm Newcastle

Vally Forge to land the Pitmen's Derby

At 6/1 a £10 bet would return £70

Over at Newmarket, I think the value pick could be KEMARI in the Fred Archer Stakes (2.40pm). James Doyle is riding out of his skin at the moment, and I think this previous Royal Ascot winner may just click back into gear by coming back in distance, I think today’s trip will suit and at the prices, I would rather be with him than his stable companion Rebel’s Romance.

I will give another chance to my old friend CONCERT HALL in the Pretty Polly on Sunday at the Curragh (3.45pm). She ran well when fourth in the Epsom Oaks - the form of which has already taken a significant boost with Nashwa coming out and landing Group 1 honours in France. Coming back down in trip to 10f shouldn’t be a problem - in fact the last time she ran over this trip she beat Magical Lagoon, who has since gone on to win the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. All in all, I think her form stacks up and she is the one to side with at 7/1.

Ed's Tip

3.45pm Curragh

Concert Hall looks pretty tasty in the Pretty Polly

At 7/1 a £10 bet would return £80
