Inter Milan vs Napoli preview, betting tips and prediction: Maurizio Sarri's men to prove Roma defeat was a blip
The biggest clash of the weekend in Serie A pits Inter Milan against Napoli at the San Siro. It’s a crucial game for Napoli in particular after the Serie A leaders fell to a surprise defeat last weekend at the hands of AS Roma.
With Juventus securing a last-minute win over Lazio, it blew the title race wide open. Lorenzo Insigne put Napoli ahead against Roma but Cengiz Under equalised a minute later. Edin Dzeko then shocked the hosts with a double and Diego Perotti compiled Napoli misery after that. Napoli couldn’t muster a comeback with Dries Mertens netting a stoppage-time consolation.
With Juventus refusing to let up, it looks like it could end up being a fatal blow in Napoli’s hopes for a first title since the days of Diego Maradona. The Old Lady are a point behind with a game in hand and their great rivals Inter can inadvertently help their cause with a result this weekend.
Inter need to string a few results together to put a stop to the rot that set in after Christmas. Luciano Spalletti’s side had a terrific start to the campaign, going on a 16-match unbeaten run before their form fell off a cliff. Now they’re fifth in the table with two wins in their last six matches.
Goalkeeper Samir Handanovic issued a rallying cry to his teammates ahead of the weekend fixture: “If you had asked me in December [if he was happy with the season] I would have said yes. But I would have added that it would be necessary to keep the concentration high until the end of the season.
Now I’m a little less satisfied. In the league, there are ups and downs, and this is definitely a negative moment that we have to overcome. I have a goal to achieve, qualifying for the Champions League, and we all have to work for that. We must react.”
We predict that the only side reacting will be Napoli. Expect the table-toppers to get back on track with a win over Inter.
