Italy take on Germany on Tuesday night and this time it’s personal. Actually, it’s always a bit personal. The wound of Italy’s Euro 2016 exit is still fresh. Once a bogey team for Germany, Joachim Low’s men triumphed thanks to a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out after a brilliantly tense clash. Games between these two have a habit of turning out epic.
This, however, is a friendly and even though the fixture is appetising, we should take that into account when previewing this game. Giampiero Ventura might see this as a game in which he can experiment. As a man said to me at a party over the weekend, things could get weird.
But the likelihood is that this will be a low-scoring, fiercely-contested affair. Nothing weird about an Italy-Germany battle. Thomas Muller has been shockingly poor in front of goal this season and failed to score in his country’s 8-0 win over San Marino, a game in which Serge Gnabry scored a hat-trick on his debut. It was also a result which made Low the most successful Germany manager of all time. As if he needed to whup San Marino to prove that.
Donnarumma could start for the Azzurri for the first time after a substitute appearance during the defeat to France in September. There are seven other players in the squad who could make their first appearance. We’re gonna suggest going for a low-scoring draw here.
Italy XI: Donnarumma, Darmian, Romagnoli, Bonucci, Zappacosta, Candreva, Verratti, De Rossi, Bonaventura, Belotti, Insigne
Germany XI: Ter Stegen, Hector, Hummels, Tah, Kimmich, Gundogan, Khedira, Gnabry, Muller, Gotze, Gomez
