Lyon vs Caen preview, betting tips and predictions: Low scoring affair forecast for Lyon
March 08, 2018
Lyon’s Europa League endeavours could ultimately be their undoing in the hunt for a Champions League place. We’re not suggesting that they will slip out of the top four in Ligue 1. That’s not going to happen.
They’re ten points clear of their next challengers and will secure that spot at the very least. However, they would ideally like to finish higher than that. Lyon have a recent history of missing out on the Champions League due to a tough qualifier against a counterpart of similar quality, like the fourth-best team in Spain or Germany.
Securing third place would see them avoid that dreaded showdown. They prepare for this weekend’s match against Caen by going to Russia to take on CSKA Moscow in the last 16 of the Europa League. Not the excursion that their already worn-out squad needed. Caen won’t give their opponents a welcome-home party.
Suffering only one defeat in their last seven matches, Caen are no pushovers. They can boast of a quite recent victory over Lyon, knocking Bruno Genesio’s side out of the French Cup. Playing in a 3-5-2 formation, they can counter-attack rapidly and this could catch out a Lyon side who play high up the pitch. Lyon’s winless streak will make fans nervous.
It’s become a thing. They have gone six games without picking up three points, a shockingly long stretch. They look a long way off their PSG-defeating form of January. That was their last win. Maybe they peaked too soon.
