Matt Le Tissier's FA Cup Final Preview
Guners To WIn 1-0
The FA Cup is the oldest club football tournament in the world and when I was a player it was pretty much the Holy Grail and I remember it with real fondness.
In 1996 we reached the quarter-finals, but lost to Manchester United 2-0. I seem to recall a certain Eric Cantona scoring that day. It’s a fantastic knockout cup competition but in recent years it has lost a bit of its shine.
I’m old school and convinced that winning a trophy should be a higher priority than ensuring a team finishes in fourth place in the league, for example. We’ve seen in recent years a number of sides perhaps not treat this tournament with the respect it deserves, but it’s great Arsenal have stepped up this term.
And I’m delighted that tomorrow’s final is once again the last game of the season. It’s a step in the right direction to help elevate this cup back to the very top and helps build anticipation for what is a great occasion.
We were treated to an incredible upset last year when Wigan Athletic stunned Manchester City 1-0. Against all logic the Citizens couldn’t cross the line and you’d probably say underdogs Hull, who are 13/2 with Titan Bet, have a better chance of beating Arsenal than the Latics did 12 months ago.
Hull, playing in their first ever FA Cup final, know just how much pressure Arsene Wenger and his team are under. The Gunners’ last piece of silverware came back in 2005 when they defeated Manchester United on penalties in this competition.
The Tigers will want to rattle their opponents in the early stages and if they can keep things level at half time that will boost their confidence no end.
The weight of expectation will continue to increase for the Arsenal players and that’s when Hull have a chance to strike.
Having said that, I do think the north London side will end their nine year wait for silverware, but it is going to be tight, despite Wenger’s side winning the last six head-to-heads.
There’s little value in backing Arsenal at 9/20 with Titan Bet but I like the look of the 1-0 correct score at 11/2 with William Hill. The last seven finals have seen just 11 goals and backing under 2.5 goals at 5/6 with SkyBet is fair.
The Gunners have lifted the trophy on five of their last six appearances in the FA Cup final and kept three clean sheets in the last three. You can get them to win to nil at 15/13 with Bwin.
Aaron Ramsey’s return from injury has coincided with much improved form from the Gunners. They’ve won their last five, keeping four clean sheets in a row and Ramsey is a fair bet to score the opener and possibly the winner. The Welshman is 7/1 with Ladbrokes to score first.
If that’s the case then backing the scorecast of Aaron Ramsey to score and Arsenal to win 1-0 could be profitable at 22/1 with William Hill.
There’s another free bet up for grabs from Coral this weekend. Tweet @freebets your correct score prediction and first goal scorer for this game using #challengeMatt. I’ve gone 1-0 and Ramsey to score first.
