Cruiserweight powerhouses Gassiev and Dorticos battle for right to face Usyk
Cruiserweight world champions Murat Gassiev (25-0, 18 KOs) and Yunier Dorticos (22-0, 21 KOs) will collide in the second World Boxing Super Series semi-final for the right to face Oleksandr Usyk.
Ukrainian Usyk rallied to an impressive majority decision success over Mairis Briedis in Latvia recently, and he will be waiting for the winner with his unified WBC and WBO cruiserweight crowns in the final.
Current IBF champion Gassiev is regarded as the clear favourite with most bookies to secure a mouth-watering tournament final match-up with Usyk.
Meanwhile, WBA titlist Dorticos is 6/5 with Paddy Power to overcome his Russian opponent and book his place in the final, which will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 11th.
After the pulsating clash between WBSS tournament favourite Usyk and Briedis, this second semi-final offers another potentially thrilling scrap, and one that looks highly unlikely of going the distance.
Both cruiserweight KO artists chasing final showdown in WBSS
In a battle of two 200lbs powerhouses, the second WBSS semi-final looks unlikely of seeing the final bell after 12 rounds at the Bolshoy Ice Dome in Sochi, Russia.
Both men secured brutal knockout victories in their respective quarter-final outings in order to reach this stage of the tournament.
Home hope Gassiev destroyed former world champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk inside three rounds in Newark last October. He dominated early in proceedings and halted the Pole with a chopping left hand to the body.
The Abel Sanchez trained Russian is therefore 11/10 with Paddy Power to stop his latest challenger on home territory.
Meanwhile, he can be backed at a promising 10/3 with Betfair to rally to a semi success inside rounds 5-8.
His Cuban foe Dorticos previously made light work of another heavy-handed Russian Dmitry Kudryashov, as the 31-year-old stormed to a second-round triumph in Texas last September.
‘The KO Doctor’ is seen at 7/4 with Paddy Power to halt Gassiev in front of his own supporters this weekend live on ITV4, having only failed to stop one of this 22 opponents to date.
Ahead of the highly-awaited super-middleweight semi-final between Britons Chris Eubank Jr and George Groves, this is another tasty match-up to whet the appetite from what has been a highly successful WBSS so far.
