Make Believe – French 2000 Guineas Longchamps

With a field of 18 set to go to post for Sunday’s Poule D’Essai Des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas) the draw is once again sure to prove crucial with those saddled with a high number berth at a significant disadvantage in Longchamp’s one mile Classic. The Charles Hills-trained Greenham Stakes winner Muhaarar has drawn the shortest straw having to come widest of all from stall 18 and the mount of Paul Hanagan, a best price 12-1 with Betfred, faces a stiff task in an effort to justify connections crossing the channel rather than taking in last week’s Qipco-sponsored Classic at Newmarket.

The Aidan O’Brien first-string Highland Reel has fared much better with Ryan Moore’s mount set to exit stall seven, but the son of Galileo has not been seen since running out an easy winner of Goodwood’s Vintage Stakes last July and looks worth opposing at odds around the 3-1 mark with the Andre Fabre runner Make Believe who can be backed at 9-2 with Betfair Sportsbook who offer £30 free bets for new customers.

The son of Newmarket 2000 Guineas winner Makfi was unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile, easily winning races at Deauville and Saint-cloud in the hands of Maxime Guyon, and made a fine seasonal debut when just losing out by a head to Ride Like The Wind in the Group 3 Prix Djebel at Maisons-Liffitte last month. The winner there had a fitness advantage having finished second at Deauville back in March and did the form no harm when beaten around eight lengths by Gleneagles at headquarters last Saturday.

Make Believe looked to have that race in safe keeping when moving through strongly to take the lead two furlongs out but lack of a previous race told close home, something which will not prove an issue on Sunday afternoon and with Olivier Peslier taking over in the saddle, the horse ideally positioned in stall four looks the one to beat for Fabre who will be trying to win the race for the sixth time.

At bigger prices two horses who could go well are Tale Of Life (14-1 generally) who should improve for his first run of the season and 33-1 chance (Racebets) El Suizo who is overpriced if recapturing his best two-year-old form.
