Alpha Centauri was a very impressive winner at Royal Ascot but runner-up Threading looks a value each-way alternative to turn the tables in Newmarket’s Falmouth Stakes.

The Jessica Harrington-trained Alpha Centauri put up possibly the best performance by a filly this season when running out a most impressive winner of Royal Ascot’s Coronation Stakes last month. The Irish 1000 Guineas victor produced a devastation turn of foot to quicken six lengths clear of her field at the royal meeting, earning the daughter of Mastercraftsman an official rating of 122.

Should the mount of Colm O’Donoghue be in the same kind of form when contesting Friday’s Group 1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket the opposition will be playing for second place but at a best price 8-11 with bet365 and a record of three defeats from her seven starts it could pay to look for a value each-way alternative against the red-hot market leader.

The all-conquering stable of Aidan O’Brien are sure to be well represented in the one mile contest being responsible for seven of the sixteen possible runners, the most likely main challenger to Alpha Centauri appearing in the shape of Lockinge Stakes winner Rhododendron. With none of the Ballydoyle fillies looking up to their usual high standard however the horse who could give the favourite most to think about is the Mark Johnston-trained Threading.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel was thrashed by Alpha Centauri at Ascot but still had the likes of Qipco 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook, leading juvenile filly Clemmie and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Teppal well behind and is clearly top class on her day, and the mount of William Buick looks excellent each-way value at 10-1 considering she appears to have nothing to fear from anything other than the main Irish challenger.

Johnston could also be represented by Nyaleti (12-1 with Ladbrokes ) who ran away with the German 1000 Guineas last time and is clearly an improving filly. But Threading looks the stable’s number one hope and should make the frame at the very least.
