Forty three horses remain in contention for Saturday’s 59th John Smith’s Cup at York following Monday’s declaration stage and with a maximum permitted field of 20 the strongly-fancied Sir Michael Stoute-trained Zaaki needs at least four defections above him in the weights in order to make the cut for the valuable one mile two and a half furlong handicap.

One horse who is guaranteed his place in the race off a mark of 100 is Thunder Blue from the stable of David Menuisier. The trainer has always held the son of Exchange Rate in high regard, believing the five-year-old to be a Group horse in the making. The grey made rapid improvement last season winning three races prior to starting favourite for the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.

The mount of Jim Crowley could never get into a challenging position over a trip ( 1m 1f ) short of his best but stayed on stoutly to finish a creditable seventh, beaten just under four lengths. Having his first run of the current campaign in Epsom’s City And Suburban Thunder Blue was given a sympathetic ride by Crowley, staying on steadily to finish a never-nearer fifth behind Ajman King and Dash Of Spice without being given a hard race.

With that run under his belt the gelding made no mistake next time over Saturday’s course and distance, running out a comfortable length and a quarter winner before heading to Royal Ascot for the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes. Sent off the 5-1 second favourite with Frankie Dettori in the saddle Thunder Blue could never recover from a bad draw in stall 20 and when unable to get into contention was allowed to come home in his own time.

Back to the scene of his most recent victory Fran Berry’s mount can win for a second time on the Knavesmire at the chief expense of the in-form Dash Of Spice who will be 13lb worse off with the selection for the two lengths that seperated the pair at Epsom earlier in the season.
