Saturday’s Card At Doncaster
March 03,2018

Hopefully the current arctic weather will relent in time for Doncaster’s excellent Saturday card to be given the green light. The William Hill Grimthorpe Handicap Chase takes centre stage at 3.35 which could see a re-run of the Sky Bet Chase on the course last month in which the Sue Smith-trained Wakanda just got the better of Warriors Tale in a race where little more than a length covered the first four home.

The best bet on the seven-race card however may be in the earlier William Hill Great Cheltenham Offers Handicap Chase at 2.25 courtesy of the Nicky Richards-trained Duke Of Navan. The Greystoke handler is enjoying an excellent season so far with one of his biggest wins coming last weekend in Newcastle’s marathon Eider Chase. The four mile contest resulted in a comfortable victory for Baywing, owned by David and Nicky Robinson and ridden by Ryan Day, the same connections associated with the selection on Saturday afternoon.

Despite falling at the second fence when strongly fancied for a Newbury handicap last December the greatest asset of the Presenting gelding is his jumping, which is usually a joy to behold. After going down by a length and three quarters to fellow rival Just Cameron on his next start in Wetherby’s Castleford Chase the ten-year-old finally got his just reward when getting up on the post to beat favourite Bigmartre over Saturday’s course and distance last month.

With the Harry Whittington-trained runner up quietly fancied by the stable for a race at the Cheltenham Festival in two weeks time the form of the Doncaster race may turn out to be very good, especially with the third horse some nine lengths away. The lightly-weighted Kauto Riko heads the betting on 4-1 but with just two runs over fences to his name the Tom Gretton-trained gelding could be in line for a jumping lesson from Duke Of Navan who can record back-to-back victories on Town Moor.
