Queen Catrine Each Way Alternative To Pontefract Favourite
Queen Catrine EW – 3.10 Pontefract
Temptress will seduce many punters on the strength of her run at Royal Ascot but it could pay to go each way on Queen Catrine at much bigger odds at Pontefract today.
Roger Charlton’s inmate was a fine second in the Royal Hunt Cup last month and has an obvious chance if reproducing the form in the Weatherbys VAT Services Pipalong Stakes at 3.10. This one mile Listed race for fillies and mares is a step up from handicap company and while not taking away for her claims, the bookies are being anything but generous offering 5/4 for the Shirocco filly.
Marco Botti-trained Pelerin showed she has ability when winning a Listed race in Ireland last October and wasn’t disgraced when contesting a Group 2 at the Curragh on her only appearance this season. The daughter of Shamardal would need to show little improvement on the last run to be a big factor here.
Another potential danger is the progressive Rekdhat. Like the favourite, she is stepping up from handicap company for the first time and could figure if continuing on her upward curve. Roger Varian’s charge ended last season on a high when winning at Musselburgh and dusted off the winter cobwebs with a good second in a 0-100 handicap on her reappearance at Salisbury in May.
However, it’s Charles Hills-trained Queen Catrine that speaks of value at the current odds. The Acclamation filly ran in Group races for much of her early career, finishing third in a Group 1 in France as a two-year-old, before setting sights a little lower. Queen Catrine landed a conditions race at Leicester on 1st June before finding one too good in a Listed race in Italy three weeks later. She never runs a bad race and at 10-1 with Sky Bet, makes great appeal as an each way option.
