Shake off those hangovers and push the turkey leftovers to one side, for its Boxing Day, and all around the country there is some great racing.
Sadly two likely bets for today were sunk without trace, as Ffos Las and Huntingdon succumbed to the deluge a few days ago.
Kempton Park and the King George VI Chase is the obvious highlight – and the front four in the market would all be worthy winners. If there was a horse at bigger prices with the ability to win the race, then it is Mount Benbulben. But given his jumping frailties, it is hard to recommend a bet against four very solid rivals.
Ohio Gold is interesting in the 1.25, as the ground has come right for him and he is well handicapped. But he jumps left under pressure, and that will be a hindrance around here.
There could be many that I could give a tentative vote to, but the one solid bet today comes in the first race at Towcester.
The rural Northamptonshire course is where it all began for me, as frequent family trips on this very festive of days laid the foundations for my love of the sport.
Mansonien L’As is a horse that I thought could go on to win a fair few low-grade staying chases when trained by Ferdy Murphy. He was being brought along slowly, as he is clearly a late-maturing sort.
He won twice for Murphy and due to that trainer’s French relocation, Mansonien L’As has since joined Donald McCain – clearly never going to be a negative in terms of general fitness.
He had a good spin around Chepstow on seasonal reappearance when most of McCain’s were needing the run, and will absolutely love the 3m around here in the mud.
The cheekpieces are back on, and he can begin what might be a profitable winter for the horse, with a win at 9/2 with 888Sport today.
