Racing Tip: Angel Gabriel To Lift The Doncaster Cup
Angel Gabriel To Lift The 2.40 Doncaster Cup
Since its inception in 1766 The Doncaster Cup has been won three times in succession by only one horse, Beeswing, who won the race on four occasions – 1837, 1840, 1841, 1842, but after winning the last two renewals the Ed Dunlop-trained Times Up will attempt to emulate the James Watson-trained stayer on Town Moor today, for which the eight-year-old is a best price 4/1 with William Hill, Ladbrokes and Betfair Sportsbook.
The son of Olden Times’ season has been geared towards another crack at the Group 2 contest and is due plenty of respect but the mount of William Buick will need to improve upon his three runs this season if he is to prove victorious.
Favourite, at a top price 6/4, is 2013 Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate who failed by a neck to follow up this year, going down to the Ballydoyle runner Leading Light. The five-year-old mare, owned by the Queen, disappointed in her next race when last of eight in the Goodwood Cup but bounced back to form at York, finding only Pale Mimosa a half length too good in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup with Times Up a further two and a quarter lengths back in third place.
A further three quarters of a length behind there was the Richard Fahey-trained Angel Gabriel and it is the mount of Paul Hanagan who is suggested as the value bet of the race at the 12/1 available with Bet365, Boylesports, Betvictor, Stan James and Ladbrokes. The race was not run to suit the son of Hurricane Run on the Knavesmire and is best judged on his impressive victory in Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate after which a try at Group company was far from over ambitious.
The five-year-old has improved since stepping up to marathon trips and his improvement can continue on Town Moor, ending any hopes connections of Times Up have of entering the record books.
