Racing Tip: Azraff The Value In Newmarket's Feature Race On Thursday
Azraff The Value At 3.40 Newmarket
The opening day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting on Thursday features just the one Group race in the shape of the Somerville Tattersall Stakes ( Group 3 ) at 3.40 in which eight two-year-olds go to post for the seven furlong contest headed by the William Haggas-trained pair of Mubtaghaa and Valley Of Fire. The former has achieved a rating of 102 following a creditable third behind Hootenanny in Royal Ascot’s Windsor Castle Stakes and more recently a victory in the valuable DBS Premier Yearling Stakes at York with stablemate Valley Of Fire close up back in third and both colts look sure to make their presence felt once again.
Godolphin’s Pontefract maiden scorer Maftool failed to justify support when stepped up in class in Kempton’s Sirenia Stakes and may struggle once again at this level while the form of Dancetrack’s Leicester win, although promising, does not look good enough in this company. The Barry Hills-trained Markaz proved no match for Angelic Lord at Doncaster prior to finishing second in a Goodwood nursery leaving Make It Up and Azraff as the two most likely to trouble the Haggas pair.
The lightly-raced Andrew Balding-trained Make It Up made all to win at Goodwood last time but the mount of David Probert got the run of the race there and may be flattered by the bare result and at the the 7-1 available with Ladbrokes the each-way value of the race could lie with Azraff from the Marco Botti stable. The son of Paco Boy has improved with each of his five runs to date and after beating a good yard-stick in Persun in a Newmarket nursery Martin Harley’s mount created a good impression when conceding weight to his six opponents at Newcastle last month, form which has worked out well with the second and third both winning recently. The step up to Group 3 company looks well worth a try for the improving juvenile who is taken to get the better of some better fancied rivals in the £50,000 contest.
