Take Blithe Spirit At 3.15 Chester
Only seven horses go to post for Chester’s Crabbie’s EBF Stallions Handicap at 3.15 on Friday afternoon and the 5f contest provides a good opportunity for the Eric Alston-trained Blithe Spirit to record her third win on the unique Roodee course following victories last August and September. The daughter of Byron got off the mark as a juvenile when, partnered by tomorrow’s jockey Jason Hart, easily landed a Ripon maiden contest on her second start, making most of the running to beat Muspelheim by a comfortable two and a half lengths. The combination stepped up in class for their next outing when finishing a creditable second to Quatuor in the Manor House Stables Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes at May’s Chester Cup meeting, a run which was followed by an attempt at Listed company when sixth in York’s EBF Marygate Stakes.
After a respectable run in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary Stakes Blithe Spirit ran well without winning on her next two starts before finally getting her head in front once again when beating the odds on favourite Bushcraft a nose in Chester’s La Dolcevita Nursery Handicap before ending the season with another win at the course, this time by a more comfortable length and a half from Secret Romance and Telegraph in September. Making her season reappearance at Thirsk last month Blithe Spirit was probably being asked the impossible when finding only Mecca’s Angel too good as that horse was running off a mark of 95 but is now rated 105 due to a highly impressive eight length victory over previous winner Eccleston last Sunday and Michael Dods charge looks every inch a Group horse in the making.
There is unlikely to be anything of Mecca’s Angel’s calibre to face on this occasion and at the 10-3 guaranteed with Bet365 Blithe Spirit looks a fair bet to beat Irish challenger Fine Cut and record her third victory at a course that seems to bring the best out of the speedy filly.
