Racing Tip: Conquisto To Win Old Roan Again

Will Smith fancies Conquisto to win a second successive Old Roan Chase at Aintree on Saturday.
At 8/1 a £10 bet would return £90

Back Conquisto In Saturday’s Old Roan Chase

Conquisto is tipped by Will Smith to land a second successive Old Roan Chase at Aintree

With the news yesterday that Dynaste would bypass this Saturday’s Old Roan Chase at Aintree for a tilt at Haydock’s Betfair Chase, I thought it a great time to look at the market for this weekend’s showpiece jumps race.

Last year’s winner Conquisto was a best-priced 8/1, and as firms quickly reassessed their books for the race, the 8/1 steadily disappeared. Having had a deeper delve into the race subsequently, I believe Steve Gollings’ tough chaser is a great each-way bet at 8/1 with Betfair Sports – the only firm still top price.

He won the race last year a shade cosily, and was mightily impressive in his jumping and cruising speed on that occasion – two attributes which are vital around Aintree’s Mildmay course. Last year’s victory came off a BHA mark of 150, on the back of a summer break and with the services of AP McCoy.

This time around he finds himself on a 4lb lower mark and again comes here a fresh horse – clearly when he runs his best races. AP McCoy will presumably not be available owing to his injury, but it has been mooted that very useful 7lb claimer Mikey Ennis could take the ride, which would mean Conquisto is in effect carrying 11lbs less than an impressive winner last year.

It appears that this year’s race is a slightly better renewal, with the likes of Uxizandre, Module, Rajdhani Express and Rolling Aces ready to appear. But I’m sure most of those will see this as a prep run for next month’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, as well as other targets.

Speaking of targets, this will categorically have been Conquisto’s almost ever since he picked up the prize last year. At 8/1 with Betfair Sports, he is an outstanding each-way bet.
