Racing Tip: Gamesome To Sprint Home At Newmarket
Gamesome – 3.30 Newmarket
Newmarket’s Sunday card revolves around the Qipco 1000 Guineas, the first fillies’ Classic of the season, and having selected the Jim Bolger-trained Lucida in the ante-post market at odds of 14-1 we can sit back in the knowledge that, win or lose, we have a value bet with the mount of Kevin Manning now trading around the 4-1 mark.
On first glance the six furlong Havana Gold Handicap at 3.00pm looks virtually impossible to solve but on closer inspection it is easy to make a strong case for the lightly-raced Olly Stevens-trained Gamesome who could well be capable of winning at a higher level, and following an encouraging seasonal reappearance when beaten a little over four lengths in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket’s Craven meeting may have been let in lightly off a mark of 100.
The son of Rock Of Gibraltar had just the two runs as a juvenile, easily winning a Nottingham maiden on his second start, and after failing to settle over seven furlongs on his three-year-old debut ran really well to finish fourth, beaten just two lengths, in a valuable big-field York handicap. Two weeks later and ridden by Jamie Spencer Gamesome cruised through to take the lead in a Windsor handicap only to be caught in the closing stages by Fairway To Heaven.
Due to a minor setback the horse was not seen again last season, making his first run for almost ten months behind the classy Astaire even more meritorious. Andrea Atzeni takes the mount on the four-year-old and with the forecast rain sure to suit should take plenty of beating at the 10-1 available with Bet365 ( 5 places ) despite having to face 22 rivals. Astaire’s stablemate Blaire may prove the biggest danger running off a 1lb lower mark than when third in last year’s Ayr Gold Cup.
