Glenard To Take 3.40 Ascot

While Newmarket’s July meeting has been blighted by squelchy weather, Ascot has been basking in sunshine, and is set to do so again today.

That will be music to the ears of Glenard’s trainer Charles Hills, as he attempts to get his career back on the eminently positive curve that it was throughout 2013. That Glenard ran two of his best races last term at Ascot on fast ground bodes well, as often Ascot is a track which horses develop a liking for, while others simply don’t produce their best on the surface.

Glenard’s four runs this season have been in races in excess of 2m. He has shaped like a non-stayer on every occasion, and the drop to 1m 6f for the handicap at 3.40 today can see him defy a handicap mark just 1lb lower than when fourth in a lucrative 1m 4f 3yo course handicap last September.

A first-time hood and the introduction of the forgiving hands of jockey George Baker for the first time can combine to see Glenard begin to repay the faith with which Hills’ has in the son of Arch.

As a sire, Arch has an outstanding record with his progeny on an all-weather surface, and often you find Ascot being a course where all-weather horses produce their best form.

We have missed the big prices, as 10/1 was quickly snapped up last night, but 13/2 with Skybet is more than fair. Having contested a Chester Cup and a Northumberland Plate (where he was motoring in front three furlongs from home), this drop in class and trip will be just what Glenard needs.
