Nicholascopernicus To Take 8.05 Windsor Feature
After a promising reappearance at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting when a respectable sixth behind Mighty Yar, despite finding plenty of trouble in running, the David Simcock-trained Cafe Society is likely to be all the rage for Windsor’s 8.05 race this evening. The lightly-raced son of Motivator is certainly open to lots of improvement but at odds in the region of 6-4 the mount of Jim Crowley is worth taking on and the horse that fits the bill at the 8-1 available with several bookmakers including Skybet and William Hill is the Ed Walker-trained Nicholascopernicus.
The 5-year-old Medicean gelding looked a horse capable of winning a decent handicap when running out an impressive winner at Goodwood in October 2012 with subsequent John Smith’s Cup winner Danchai back in fifth place, in receipt of 1lb. Despite failing to find the winners enclosure since that effort Nicholascopernicus has several fine performances to his name most notably when finding only Lahaag too good in an ultra-competitive York handicap last autumn off a 1lb higher mark and a reproduction of that form should be more than good enough to take tonight’s contest.
A creditable 7th in last year’s Betfred November Handicap at Doncaster the mount of William Buick began this season at Salisbury when well beaten behind Whiplash Willie but the horse looked badly in need of that run and was eased when unable to make any impression on the leaders. Nicholascopernicus should strip much fitter on his second run of the present campaign and off his lowest mark since winning that Goodwood race 19 month’s ago looks excellent each-way value against the warm favourite.
