Racing Tip: Rogue Angel and Balbriggan Against Troytown Chase Field
Rogue Angel 2.25 Navan
Tomorrow’s Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan is the main betting race of a fascinating Sunday across the Irish Sea.
It may pay to take two against the field, as it is a fiendishly competitive renewal of a race which is usually on the open side, but with all 25 runners and both reserves currently on offer at best price between 12/1 and 33/1, this year’s looks more devilish than usual.
Favourite with most firms is Tony Martin’s Living Next Door, who fell at the last when throwing down a challenge in the race last year. He is 12lbs higher this time though, and despite having had a prep run over hurdles two weeks ago, shouldn’t be a shorter price than Mouse Morris’ Rogue Angel.
Rogue Angel and Living Next Door locked horns in March’s National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and watching that race back again, it is clear that Rogue Angel would be more suited to a fast run handicap at this level over 3m, whereas Living Next Door was staying on late again.
His reappearance run at Galway was striking, and he will be much fitter tomorrow. At 16/1 with Paddy Power, who offer 5 places, he is the main bet of the race.
I have to chuck a few quid each-way at Gordon Elliott’s Balbriggan, who ran in perhaps the standout piece of handicap chase form so far this season – the Amateur Riders Handicap Chase at Cheltenham’s October meeting – just being outstayed up the hill by subsequent Badger Ales runaway ‘winner’ The Young Master and Charingworth, who won a similar race at Cheltenham’s November.
At 18/1 with bet365, who also pay out on 5 places, the dry forecast for tomorrow is encouraging for Elliot’s grey chaser, as he lurks on a nice mark at the foot of the weights, with Kevin Sexton taking a nice 3lbs off too.
