Saints To Find Stride Against Hammers
Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier tips Southampton to get into full stride against West Ham at St Mary’s on Sunday.
Last season the Saints would probably have been happy with a draw going into a fixture like this but it’s a measure of how well they have adapted to life in the top flight that the expectation is now for a win.
Mauricio Pochettinoi has a fully fit squad at his disposal and Ricky Lambert, who is on a high at the moment, goes in search of his 200th career goal to celebrate his 200th appearance for Southampton. The players will be looking to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat at Norwich in the last game and have a good opportunity against the Hammers who are trying to recover from a home defeat to Stoke.
Saints were slow into their stride in their first game at St Mary’s when drawing 1-1 against Sunderland. But they were unlucky not to take all three points after finishing the game strongly and can go one better this weekend.
Matt Le Tissier tips: “Southampton have yet to hit full stride and have another tight game versus West Ham earlier in the afternoon. The defeat at Norwich last time was disappointing but we can put that behind us. The Hammers will make things hard. They defend well but haven’t got a lot up front with Andy Carroll out injured and the 4/1 on offer at Sky Bet for draw half-time Saints full-time looks good value.”
Sam Allerdyce’s attacking options look poor without the injured Andy Carroll. Ricardo Vaz Te with six, has the most Premier League goals of the three other strikers at the club, new free transfer signing Mladen Petric has five and Modibo Maiga two. The Hammers have not scored in the league since the first game of the season and their long-ball game has been tailored around Carroll’s strength in the air.
