After a five-year hiatus – due to… well, Covid-19 and a lack of interest – the Hong Kong Masters is back on the World Snooker Tour schedule.
This eight-player invitational has only been played once since 1990 – then known as the Hong Kong Challenge – back in 2017, with Neil Robertson beating 6-3 in the final following earlier round wins over Marco Fu and Mark Selby.
But with a stacked field of some of the best potters in the world, the 2022 edition is set to light a fire back in the tournament as play gets underway on Thursday from inside the Hong Kong Coliseum.
Let’s take a look at some of the tournament betting ahead of the 2022 Hong Kong Masters:
Neil Robertson to win the 2022 Hong Kong Masters at 4/1 with Paddy Power
Robertson won this event back in 2017 and has since had plenty of joy on the World Snooker Tour.
The Australian won the English Open, the Players Championship, Tour Championship and the Masters in the 2021-22 season and will be looking to kick-start his campaign after not featuring in any of the opening three tournaments.
Robertson has a fantastic attacking style on the table and balanced temperament, perfect for these short-sprint matches that can be over in a flash.
His opening fixture comes against Zhao Xintong and a likely semi-final against Ronnie O’Sullivan could see him into back-to-back Hong Kong Masters finals.
At 4/1, Robbo is well worth a look in the tournament outrights.
Mark Selby to reach the final at 6/4 with bet365
Whisper it, but Mark Selby might be back.
Granted, it’s pretty hard to argue that the four-time world champion ever really went away, but with time spent away from the baize in recent years focussing on his health, it was questioned whether we would truly see the “Jester” properly enjoying his snooker again.
He ran well at last week’s British Open notching up a ridiculous 147 break, including trebling a red, and his tail will be up despite a 5-3 loss to eventual runner-up Mark Allen in the quarter-finals.
Selby has Marco Fu in the opening round and then must get past either Judd Trump or John Higgins – who both exited the British Open early – to reach the final.
Ronnie O’Sullivan highest break at 7/2 with bet365
Ronnie O’Sullivan was “rubbish” at the British Open – they are Stephen Hendry’s words, not mine.
But if you’re willing to take that small sample size of the “Rocket’s” form and apply it to this week’s Hong Kong Masters then you are making a big mistake.
O’Sullivan is, after all, a showman, and as a 1/200 favourite in his opening round match against local Ng On-yee, we’re expecting the seven-time world champion to flex his muscles.
7/2 for a man who has made over 1,100 centuries in his professional career to make the highest break at the Hong Kong Masters is a well worth a look.
