Steps – 3.45 Epsom

Saturday’s Investec Derby meeting has a great supporting card featuring another Group 1 contest in the Investec Coronation Cup at 3.10 and it is surely heading across the channel – as the first prize of £212,662 looks a straight match between the French challengers Dolniya and Flintshire.

However, at the other extreme the five furlong Investec Corporate Banking “Dash” at 3.45 could go to any of the 20 horses taking part in the fastest minimum trip – bar none.

Last year’s contest went to the Tony Carroll-trained Caspian Princem who will have to defy an 11lb higher mark in an attempt to win the race for a second time.

Although, it is a number of those who were unsuccessful 12 months ago who make more appeal – particularly top weight Steps, a talented sprinter when things go right for the son of Verglas and due a change of luck following several far from clear passages since winning a Listed race at Haydock last May.

Following that victory over Eton Rifles, Steps finished fourth in the “Dash” off a welter burdon of 9st 12lb, beaten less than a length after suffering plenty of trouble in running and granted more luck from stall 5 and off a 1lb lower mark can give weight all around under jockey Jim Crowley.

Seeking Magic, runner-up last year, is another who should go well as Oisin Murphy’s mount meets the head winner on a massive 17lb better terms, but Clive Cox’s seven-year-old has failed to run up to that form since and will need plenty of luck from his middle draw.

A bigger danger may turn out to be the David Nicholls-trained Barnet Fair, who ran well when sixth last year and looked to be running into form when finishing four lengths behind Red Baron at Thirsk last time.
