Tip For Royal Ascot’s Hardwicke Stakes: Barsanti Too Big At 10/1 For Royal Ascot’s Hardwicke Stakes
June 14, 2018
With several bookmakers electing to go non-runner-no-bet on many of the races at Royal Ascot now could be a good time to pinpoint a bit of value at the greatest Flat meeting in the world and the contest which appeals most is the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes on the final day.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Crystal Ocean heads the betting at a best price 2-1 with Betvictor and it is easy to make a strong case for last season’s St Leger runner-up, especially following the son of Sea The Stars two recent victories. The likely mount of Ryan Moore could finish only third in the King Edward V11 Stakes at last year’s royal meeting however and it may be that the Berkshire venue does not play to the strengths of the four-year-old colt.

Just what is likely to take on the favourite for the mile and a half contest is unclear at this stage but with chief market rivals Defoe and Poets Word far from certain to turn up, the former due to the possibility of fast ground and with the latter more likely to run in Wednesday’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, the horse who can cause Crystal Ocean most problems is Barsanti from the Roger Varian stable.
Despite being a six-year-old the Champs Elysees gelding is probably at the peak of his form and has performed with great credit on his two visits to Ascot. Beaten half a length by Idaho in this race 12 months ago the mount of Andrea Atzeni looked an unlucky loser, gaining on the winner hand over fist in the closing stages after failing to obtain a clear run. Back to Ascot for his most recent start Barsanti ran out a cosy winner from Mirage Dancer with narrow Coronation Cup runner-up Salouen two lengths back in third place.

In a race which could easily result in a single-figure field Barsanti looks an outstanding each-way bet at 10-1 considering the horse has only the one entry at the royal extravaganza.
