Tip For Saturday’s Lockinge Stakes: Addeybb To Prove His Class In Lockinge Stakes
May 17, 2018
Newbury stage the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes on Saturday and with a royal wedding and an F.A. Cup final taking place the Group 1 contest faces plenty of competition in the viewing stakes but with a high-class field of milers set to lock horns at the Berkshire venue the race promises to attract plenty of interest.
With an entry of four at the five-day declaration stage the all-conquering stable of Aidan O’Brien will be expected to field a strong challenge in an effort to win yet another race at the highest level, the most serious Ballydoyle contender likely to be the four-year-old Rhododendron. Runner-up to stablemate Winter in last season’s Qipco 1000 Guineas the impeccably-bred filly went on to finish second again in the Epsom Oaks but finally got her Group 1 victory when beating another O’Brien inmate Hydrangea in the Prix de L’Opera at Chantilly.
The daughter of Galileo almost certainly needed the run when fourth behind Cracksman in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp last month and is certain to come on for the run but may not appreciate the drop back to a mile and could be vulnerable to something with a bit more toe at the business end of the race. Both Limato and Beat The Bank have obvious claims on their best form but the most unexposed horse in the race is the William Haggas-trained Addeybb who can make the transition from handicapper to Group 1 performer.

The lightly-raced Pivotal gelding turned out to be the proverbial ‘ handicap good thing ‘ when hacking up from a good horse in Lord Glitters in Doncaster’s historic Lincoln Handicap, pulling well clear of that horse after travelling supremely well throughout the race. Stepping up to Group 2 level on his next start in Sandown’s bet365 Mile the mount of James Doyle easily coped with the higher class, running out an impressive two and three quarter length winner.
Just how far Addeyebb is capable of progressing is anyone’s guess but at the 11/2 available with Betfair Sportsbook is certainly worth chancing at the highest level.
