Middleweight champion Whittaker seeks second success over Romero in UFC 225 rematch

Robert Whittaker (19-4) will defend his middleweight title in a highly awaited rematch with Yoel Romero (13-2) this weekend in the main event of UFC 225.

The two men previously collided at UFC 213 last July, with Whittaker prevailing over five rounds to claim the then vacant interim belt.

New Zealand born Australian Whittaker was soon promoted to undisputed champion after his impressive decision success over the esteemed Cuban grappler and will next defend it at the United Center in Chicago.

It’s the reigning 185lbs titlist that will enter the octagon in Illinois as the odds-on 1/2 favourite with Betfair to come out on top for second successive meeting.

Romero is hellbent on avenging that only UFC career loss, though, and the former 2000 Olympics Silver medal-winning wrestler is a promising 2/1 underdog with bet365 to prevail in this anticipated rematch.

Romero goes in search of revenge and middleweight crown with Whittaker win

Following their competitive initial match-up in July last year in Las Vegas, Whittaker and Romero are set to lock horns once again for what could be another dramatic encounter.

The two leading lights in the middleweight division battled out a Fight of the Night in that first clash and there will likely be the same action this time around.

Whittaker had his hand raised with a unanimous decision triumph in that meeting and the 27-year-old champion is 12/5 with Coral to defend his strap with another points victory here.

The current middleweight king is also 17/10 with Paddy Power for a KO win over Romero, having stopped both Derek Brunson and Ronaldo Souza before outworking Romero last year.

Meanwhile, after admitting to making changes in his approach and upcoming gameplan during training camp, Cuban challenger Romero will take to the cage at 3/1 with Betfred for a KO win of his own.

The now 41-year-old is also 10/3 with bet365 to claim the crown by submission and 8/1 with Betfair to come out the victor via decision.

It will only take one of Romero’s concussive power strikes to land in order for him to become UFC middleweight champion this weekend. But Whittaker has been on a sublime run of form of late and should be able to replicate his last performance to retain his title in Chicago.

Robert Whittaker is 12/5 to win by decision with Coral.
