January 31, 2018
Home hero Lyoto Machida faces rising middleweight contender Eryk Anders in Brazil
MMA veteran Lyoto Machida (22-8) will face off with rising middleweight contender Eryk Sanders (10-0) in his home nation of Brazil this weekend in the UFC Belem main event.
In somewhat of a surprising match-up at the Arena Guilherme Paraense, Machida, nearing the end of his illustrious career, takes on a dangerous, unbeaten challenger in Anders.
The home favourite will be desperately seeking a win after a dismal run of three consecutive defeats and only one victory in his last five octagon outings since July 2014.
Machida will therefore enter his latest bout as the 15/8 underdog with Paddy Power to bring an end to his losing streak on home territory.
Alabama native Sanders will take to fight night with quite a contrasting run of form. The 30-year-old has momentum on his side after two impressive victories since arriving on the UFC scene.
Those successes have seen him go undefeated in 10 professional appearances to date and he is the 4/11 favourite to prevail once again against Machida on Brazilian soil.
Machida and Anders seeking big Brazil success in latest UFC Fight Night
Despite three successive losses at the hands of Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero and Derek Brunson, Machida had no hesitation in signing up to take on upcoming fighter Anders on home turf.
The now 39-year-old last won a fight in December 2014, when he stopped C.B Dollaway in the opening round of their scrap in Brazil.
Returning home once again the experienced former UFC light heavyweight title holder will be aiming to upset his younger foe and get back on track in the latter stages of his long-standing career.
Although, he faces a tough task against Anders, with the former College footballer having racked up two solid victories over both Rafael Natal and Markus Perez in the organisation.
He halted Natal in the opening round of their encounter last July before going on to outpoint Perez in December. The Birmingham-born fighter is seeking yet another big success and this would surely be his most high-profile to date against an esteemed MMA legend.
Betfair are offering odds of 11/10 for this intriguing match-up to have over 2.5 total rounds, as both men seek a weekend win for different circumstances in Brazil.
