US Open Betting Tips

The 2017 US Open will be the 137th edition of the world’s oldest Grand Slam competition and the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year. It will be held on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Stan Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber are the reigning men’s and women’s singles champions, though Wawrinka withdrew from this year’s competition before the start of the tournament due to a knee injury that ended his season.

In the men’s side of the tournament, we will also be missing two time US Open champion Novak Djokovic through the elbow injury he suffered at Wimbledon and Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori with wrist injuries. On the women’s side, six time champion Serena Williams is still absent due to pregnancy.

Roger Federer enters the men’s tournament as 6/4 favourite with most bookmakers with ample records available to be broken if he is triumphant. Federer, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors currently hold the record for most Open-era US Open men’s singles titles with five each, meaning Federer can take his sixth here. Federer will also set a new Open-era age record if he wins the title this year – no 36-year-old has ever won the US Open.

His direct competition comes from Rafael Nadal, who is priced at 11/4 to come out on top. Federer and Nadal have met 37 times (the third most-played men’s match of the Open era) but not once at the US Open.

Federer has won both championships he has competed it in already this year (the Australian Open and Wimbledon), while Nadal rolled back the years to win his first Grand Slam and French Open since 2014 when he defeated Stan Wawrinka – in Federer’s absence, that is.

The other familiar name in the running is Britain’s Andy Murray, who is priced as high as 10/1 to be successful here. Murray’s first Grand Slam success was actually at this tournament back in 2012, but he has never advanced past the Quarter Finals in the years afterwards and, after his recovery from injury, it appears unlikely that Murray will be able to step up on the hard courts.

The value lies with Federer here. With 24 wins and just two losses in his last 26 Grand Slam fixtures, Federer is beginning to look unbeatable once more. His absence from this competition last year allowed him to train and get fit and focused for his two tournament successes – his entry this year tells you that his confidence is extremely high and he believes he can win his first US Open tournament since 2008.

Federer’s Semi Final and Final losses in 2010, 2011 and 2015 came against Djokovic, who is missing from this year’s event. Nadal has exited in the 3rd round and 4th round in his last two US Open events and offers no real value.

Federer has been indisputably dominant this year and witnessing him make history here would be no surprise at all. Lump on while you can.
