The World Cup Play-Offs: Can Northern Ireland and the Republic Make Russia?
November 10, 2017
It’s the moment of truth for Michael and Martin O’Neill as they take on Switzerland and Denmark respectively to secure a place at World Cup 2018.
Both sides had good qualifying campaigns with Northern Ireland picking up some good results against the Czech Republic and Norway, while hardly disgracing themselves against the Germans.
They do go into the tie as underdogs, but will be hoping that the famous Windsor Park atmosphere will see them through the first leg.
They’re 3/1 to get the job done tonight with the Switzerland odds to beat Northern Ireland at 23/20 among top UK bookies.
You’d expect Northern Ireland to get something though. Before their defeat to Germany, they’d won all their home qualifiers without conceding, but it will be tight. A Northern Ireland 1-0 win is 7/1 with bookies, while 0-0 may also be a good bet at 5/1.
If you’re fancying Switzerland though, you’re looking at shorter odds of 9/2 for a 1-0 win.
Naturally, Switzerland, who are ranked 15th in the world are favourite to qualify for the World Cup at 1/ 3.
The second leg will be crucial. A tight leg at Windsor Park could mean Northern Ireland do what they have done for the past few years, upset the odds!
Can The Republic Beat The Danes?
The Republic of Ireland will be grateful for their draw against Denmark but they’ll certainly want to get the first leg out of the way as they travel across the North Sea on Saturday.
Denmark of course go into the game as favourite at 8/11, after some good recent form which sees them unbeaten in five.
They do have injury worries though which Martin O’Neill’s men could make the most of. Four players could miss out for the Danes, including striker Nicolai Jorgensen.
Harry Arter has praised the Irish side’s determination ahead of the tie and you can get them at 9/2 to pick up a win.
A draw and take them back to the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday night will be a popular choice among the Irish who will be backing their boys at the 11/10 odds to qualify for Russia.
For the Premier League fans among us, a Christian Eriksen goal and Denmark to win bet looks handy at 7/2 with bet365, while Denmark to win and both teams to score is our top tip at 18/5.
