The UEFA Champions League round of 16 concludes with four ties this week, all of which are finely poised following last month’s first legs.
Here are our betting tips for this week’s round of 16 first leg action.
Champions League Betting Tips - Tuesday 12 & Wednesday 13 March
UEFA Champions League Acca of the Day
Arsenal vs Porto betting tips
Following a very disappointing display at Estádio do Dragão, Arsenal have work to do if they’re going to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years.
In truth, the first leg in Northern Portugal was a rather dull affair, with the ball in play for a miserly 50 minutes, with the tie destine to end in a drab 0-0.
However, with the last kick of the night, Galeno lashed home an absolute rocket, David Raya didn’t have a prayer, sparking wild celebration from the Porto supporters, as their team snatching victory.
How crucial will this prove to be?
The Dragões have reached the quarter-finals of this tournament on three occasions since 2015, but their record on English soil is miserable.
Porto have never won in England, losing each of their last three visits, while their overall record stands at: zero wins, three draws and 19 defeats, hammered 5-0 and 4-0 during their two previous outings at the Emirates.
Of course, Sérgio Conceição’s side don’t need to win this one, a clean sheet will see them complete the upset but, even with a one-goal advantage, the Portuguese giants kick off as underdogs.
Arsenal meanwhile are flying domestically, winning eight matches in succession, scoring 33 goals in this period, sat top of the Premier League, hence why their defeat in the first leg was such an aberration.
In the Champions League however, the Gunners’ recent-record is underwhelming, beaten in each of their last seven last 16 ties, dating back to a victory over Porto in 2010, in which they lost away but roared back at home.
All the pressure and expectation will be on Mikel Arteta’s team to repeat that feat so getting an early goal will be key, otherwise a nervy night awaits for those in attendance in North London.
Barcelona vs Napoli betting tips
In tie tie, the champions of Italy and Spain could not be separated at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in February, but there must be a winner as they reconvene in Catalonia.
The first leg was a tale of two strikers, with Robert Lewandowski firing Barcelona ahead on the hour mark in trademark fashion, before Victor Osimhen salvaged a draw for Napoli 15 minutes later.
It’s pretty safe to say that neither of these teams are anywhere near as strong as they were en route to their respective titles 12 months ago, meaning both will fancy their chances of advancing to the last eight.
Napoli are already onto their third head coach of the season, sacking Rudi Garcia in November and Walter Mazzarri on the cusp of the first leg, but Francesco Calzona has made a tangible improvement.
Under him, I Partenopei have climbed up the Serie A table, smashing Sassuolo 6-1, defeating fierce rivals Juventus 2-1 before, on Friday night, being held to a 1-1 draw by Torino, which was a bit of a set-back.
As recently as last season, Napoli reached the quarter-finals of this competition for the very first time, eventually dumped out by A.C. Milan, so getting there again would be a momentous achievement.
Barcelona meanwhile haven’t won a Champions League knockout tie since defeating Napoli in 2020, also drawing 1-1 in Naples back then, before a 3-1 victory behind-closed-doors 165 days later.
Two seasons ago, the pair met in the Europa League knockout phase too, with Barça advancing 5-3 on aggregate, with Xavi’s team favourites to repeat that feat.
However, the Blaugrana are far from reliable, losing three La Liga games at Montjuïc already, beaten 2-1 in the Clásico, before recent hammerings at the hands of Girona and Villarreal, defeated 4-2 and 5-3 respectively.
Nevertheless, having drawn on the road, Barcelona have to be favourites to get through, so will the five-times European champions prevail at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys?
Atlético Madrid vs Internazionale Milano betting tips
Turning our attention to Wednesday night’s fixtures, there was never likely to be very much between these two teams, and so it proved at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
The first leg witnessed just a solitary goal, but how crucial could it prove to be, with Marko Arnautović, yes really, firing home a rebound just 11 minutes from time to secure a much-deserved victory for Inter.
So, Simone Inzaghi’s side will bring with them a lead, but will they rue not claiming a bigger margin of victory?
Internazionale are going under the radar in European football, but have to be one of the favourites to win this competition, not least because they got to last season’s final, only narrowly beaten by Man City.
In Serie A meantime, I Nerazzurri are a humungous 16 points clear at the top, losing only twice in any competition all season, beaten by Sassuolo in September and by Bologna in the Coppa Italia in December.
In Champions League terms, this is Inter’s first two-legged tie against Spanish opposition since that famous semi-final victory over Barcelona in 2010, when they parked the bus and battled through at Camp Nou.
While we don’t expect Inzaghi’s team to adopt similar tactics to Mourinho’s vintage back then, a draw would be enough to see Inter advance, confident of claiming that result.
As for Atlético Madrid, it was no surprise that they were beaten at San Siro, given their horrendous away form, yielding a miserly five points from their last nine La Liga away games, beaten by lowly Cádiz on Saturday.
In front of their own supporters however, los Colchoneros are a different beast, winning 18 of 20 matches in all competition, notably beating Real Madrid twice as well as Feyenoord, Celtic and Lazio in the group phase.
Under Diego Simeone, when losing the first leg away of a Champions League knockout tie, Atleti have managed to get through twice in four attempts.
They turned it around against Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and Barcelona the following season, but have subsequently been dumped out by Real Madrid in 2017 and Manchester City two seasons ago.
This tie could go either-way but, with a narrow advantage, we’re backing Inter to get over the line at Cívitas Metropolitano.
Borussia Dortmund vs PSV Eindhoven betting tips
Last, but by no means least, it’s winner takes all at Westfalenstadion, following a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands.
Three weeks ago, Donyell Malen fired home an opener for Borussia Dortmund mid-way through the first half, apologising to the Philips Stadion crowd for doing so, having spent spent four years in Eindhoven.
However, this would not prove to be the winner, because Malik Tillman was brought down by Mats Hummels soon after half time, with Luuk de Jong confidently converting the subsequent, controversial spot-kick.
Dortmund were not happy with referee Srđan Jovanović for awarding this spot-kick, but are favourites to get through this tie, having earned a credible draw in the Netherlands.
Die Schwarzgelben have been very impressive in this season’s Champions League, surprisingly topping the group of death, above Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle.
Since reaching the final 11 years ago, Dortmund have featured in the quarter-finals of this competition on three occasions, in 2014, 2017 and 2021, getting no further, but this trend suggests they’ll get through again.
The German club have only ever won three of 12 previous meetings with Dutch opposition, but most expect Edin Terzić's team to make home advantage count here.
PSV Eindhoven meantime are competing in the knockout phase for the first time since 2016, dumped out by Atlético on penalties back then, so are dreaming of getting into the last eight for the first time in 17 years.
Domestically, Peter Bosz’s team have been almost flawless, winning 22 of 25 Eredivisie matches, meaning they’re ten points clear, very much on course for a first tile in six seasons.
In Europe however, PSV haven’t always been able to deal with the step-up in quality, hammered 4-0 at Arsenal in the group stages, winning only one of their last 16 away fixtures in this competition, excluding qualifiers.
Thus, in what should be a high-scoring affair, Borussia Dortmund are favourites to get through.
