Sheffield United to beat Wigan – 4/9

The fact Wigan are five points adrift of safety in the Championship, ironically, isn’t even top of their list of problems.

A 1-0 victory over QPR last Saturday gives the Latics a glimmer of hope of saving their second-tier status, but really the deeper concerns are over finances.

The club had a cashflow issue in March, which caused a delay in payment of wages, and chairman Talal Al Hammad said it would not happen again.

Defender Steven Caulker was critical of the club’s ownership before an announcement that the players had been paid, and Chief Executive Mal Brannigan resigned.

There isn’t a particularly long queue of wealthy businesspeople hoping to buy the West Lancashire club, so the feeling in the fanbase is a willingness to trust the current personnel and hope they can find the solutions.

However, the issues make this an uncertain time for the Latics, and if the worst does happen, next season will be at best one of consolidation and stabilization in League One.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, could be two divisions above them.

The Blades were being chased by in-form Middlesbrough, but a 1-0 win at Norwich combined with the latter’s shock 4-2 loss at Huddersfield on Saturday puts them in a more comfortable position: six points ahead with a game in hand.

United have a great incentive to extend the gap to nine points, before Boro have the ominous assignment of a trip to Burnley later in the day, with the champions-elect yet to mathematically rubber-stamp promotion.

Derby to win at Forest Green – 4/7

The highlight of Forest Green’s season was pulling off one of League One’s shock results of 2022-23, beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at The New Lawn.

Despite that result, and the contributions of Manchester United loanee Charlie Savage, the Green Devils have lost 14 of their previous 18 league games and sit bottom of the table, 12 points adrift of safety.

For a long time, attentions have turned from whether they can get out of trouble, to what next season will look like in League Two after a period of change.

Chairman Dale Vince has appointed a Chief Scout in Terry McPhillips, and could be in the market for a Sporting Director, after Richard Hughes left for Portsmouth earlier in the season.

All their performances between now and May are about rebuilding some optimism after such a testing campaign.

Visitors Derby, meanwhile, intend to avoid the same fate in Nailsworth as Sheffield Wednesday, though Paul Warne’s side are wobbling in League One’s Play-Off scramble with four defeats in five.

Those losses, barring Fleetwood, have come against top sides, but the Rams have tended to flourish against the bottom sides, and demolished Forest Green 4-0 earlier in the season, thanks to a David McGoldrick hat-trick.

If McGoldrick and Max Bird bring their A-game once again, it should be a crucial victory that gets Derby back on track.

Plymouth Argyle to win at Morecambe – 8/13

Similarly to Wigan in the Championship, Morecambe might be more focused on off-field matters right now than on-field, despite being in severe danger of the drop.

The Shrimps find themselves four points adrift of safety, and most of their relegation rivals have played two games fewer, so Derek Adams’ side require approximately 12 points from their remaining six league games to beat the drop.

It’s a tall order, with Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth and Wycombe to come, but the greater concern is who owners Bond Group Investments sell their shares to.

The people running Morecambe day-to-day do some incredible work, and have the club’s best interests at heart, but they’re not the ones who have the biggest stakes, or any power as to who acquires them.

Wages for March have now been paid, but there was a delay, which hasn’t exactly filled supporters with confidence, nor, on the pitch, did Saturday’s 5-0 drubbing at Barnsley.

The Shrimps have some tidy operators but they don’t have much of a cutting edge.

Despite having had a mad January when they hit five past Burton and Bristol Rovers, they’ve only actually scored more than once on six occasions all season: even with 37 goals in 40, the ‘For’ column is a slight red herring.

As such, Plymouth Argyle should get the result they need to ensure they spend their Easter Weekend in the top two, despite last Sunday’s Wembley heartache, in a 4-0 EFL Trophy loss to Bolton.

Bradford to win at Crawley – 6/5

Crawley have threatened to turn a corner under Scott Lindsey, and had recently gone five league games unbeaten, but that came to a crashing halt when they lost 4-1 at Mansfield last time out.

The Red Devils allowed crosses in too easily in Nottinghamshire, and lacked a physical presence up top, where they’ve struggled to give the required service to nippy strikers Dom Telford and Ashley Nadesan.

Still, the Sussex outfit find themselves above the drop zone thanks to their March form, while it’s last chance saloon for Bradford, in terms of the automatic promotion race.

The Bantams are four points off third-placed Stevenage, and six shy of second-placed Northampton with a game in hand on the latter, whom they go to on the last weekend of April.

If Mark Hughes’ side can cut the gap by one point between now and that match, they would have a chance of leapfrogging the Cobblers before the final day by winning that game, then taking the points at lower midtable side Crewe the following midweek.

City have never truly set pulses racing this season, but they have match-winners at both ends in goalkeeper Harry Lewis and front-man Andy Cook.

Stevenage to beat Colchester – 6/10

An excellent second half performance saw Stevenage grab a crucial point at promotion rivals Northampton.

The result leaves Boro with just three wins in their last 12 league games, after late-January’s 3-0 victory over Leyton Orient, but in that time they’ve faced six of the top 10.

Manager Steve Evans got his substitutions right at Sixfields, too: strikers Danny Rose and Jamie Reid made a real impact in the second half with their fresh legs, with the latter producing a moment of wizardry to fire the team level, after striking both posts.

Jake Forster-Caskey, who also came on at the break, improved their use of the ball too, while Jordan Roberts produced some delightful ball-carrying moments.

Stevenage have an excellent platform, because defenders like Carl Piergianni win so many of their headers and the team rarely loses two duels consecutively, so opponents rarely have room to breathe: it allows Boro to crank up the pressure as games wear on.

Evans’ side should get back to winning ways against Colchester, who are three points above the drop zone after an eight-game winless streak.
