What is a Market Mover?
A Market Mover is a horse whose odds have shortened or lengthened in the lead-up to a race. A horse whose price gets larger from the market opening is called a drifter, whereas a horse whose price shortens is called a steamer. The price will change depending on the volume of bets placed on a horse.
Why do Market Movers occur?
Regarding a horse’s price shortening up in the betting, this can occur for several reasons.
Owners may feel that their horse has a strong chance in a race and will look to place a bet early at the best possible price. A positive mention from a trainer or a jockey about a horse can also shorten the price as punters latch on.
It’s important to note, though, that any Market Mover will have a ‘snowball effect’ as other punters notice the odds shortening and will then also back the horse.
