As Wales prepare for their opening game in the tournament against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday February 5th, would you want to be in Dan Biggar’s boots and would you be brave enough to put money on Wales winning with at least six experienced players and household names missing, such as Alun Wyn Jones, Ken Owens, George North, Dan Lydiate, Josh Navidi and Taulupe Faletau?
The challenge facing Biggar as captain is of gigantic proportions and his first game as captain couldn’t be harder.Playing in Dublin is tough enough, but to take on a confident Irish side that beat the All Blacks..again.. before Christmas makes it all the more difficult, particularly when several British and Irish Lions are absent.
Biggar’s experience will matter & may help Wales overcome disadvantages
The Wales and current British and Irish Lions fly half is well used to the big match occasion, having played in 96 Tests between 2008 and 2021.
In international rugby, Biggar has scored more than 500 points and in matches where the scores going into the final stages are close, a goal kicker of his accuracy is just what’s required.
He may not be a prolific try scorer..only seven in Tests..but he can create opportunities for others and is certain to add to his tally of 82 conversions, 105 penalties and seven drop goals during this year’s tournament.
Biggar’s well respected by players and a success internationally, and while Wales coach Wayne Pivac wasn’t spoilt for choice because alternatives were few and far between, nevertheless he’s made a wise decision and one which should inspire Wales to put behind them any weaknesses caused by the absence of senior players.
Three homes games in Cardiff are a big help
After the Ireland clash in Dublin, Wales play the first of three games at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff against Scotland on Saturday February 12th, followed by France and Italy in March.
With more than 70,000 spectators shouting for you and inspiration provided by mass singing, why not back Wales to win at home?
Biggar will be optimistic of winning in Cardiff, but his chances of success in Dublin and Twickenham against England on Saturday February 26th are less certain.
A Northampton Saints player since 2018 when he moved from Ospreys, based in Swansea, Biggar has benefited from playing in the English Premiership, and this experience will be significant during the England match because the new Wales captain will be familiar with the players England coach, Eddie Jones, has picked for what’s still regarded as the Principality’s most important and emotional game in the Six Nations.
