Things can only get… bigger in the PDC.
We’re up to a whopping 40 teams in this year’s World Cup of Darts, with Iceland, Guyana and Gibraltar making up some of the minnows of this year’s competition.
Australia are the surprise reigning champions from 2022 after toppling Wales in the final, and Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta are back looking to make it back-to-back titles in Frankfurt.
But most eyes will be on England (10/3 with bet365) and Wales (6/5 with William Hill) – the two favourites in the betting – both teams featuring players from the top seven in the world.
Let’s take a look at some of the betting favourites for this year’s competition:
Wales to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (6/5 with William Hill)
It’s hard to argue against the corner of Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton.
The pair scooped the 2020 title and are the favourites again in Frankfurt after showing good form in the Premier League.
Both Price and Clayton reached the final four of the Premier League and have more than enough experience on the big stage.
Wales reached last year’s final and their biggest possible hurdle to repeat this feat is the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
England to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (10/3 with bet365)
England haven’t won the World Cup of Darts since the glory days of 2016 with Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis, but stand a real chance in Frankfurt considering the winning momentum of world number one Michael Smith.
Alongside Rob Cross, Smith pushes England into second favourite at 10/3 with bet365, and both have solid wins on tour already in 2023.
Cross is unplayable on his day, but his day is becoming more infrequent than the years that followed his world title win in 2018.
Smith is playing well enough to carry this team and a World Cup title would look good alongside the rest of his titles over the past nine months.
Netherlands to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (11/2 with bet365)
Michael van Gerwen’s withdrawal from this year’s World Cup has opened the door for Dirk van Duijvenbode.
The “Aubergenius” is number 11 in the world and a perfect replacement for MVG who is still recovering after recent surgery.
Back-to-back titles in 2017-18 are the last time the Dutch tasted World Cup success, and they are the joint best performers at the World Cup alongside England with four titles.
Noppert’s calmness under pressure and DvD’s energy on the oche are the perfect compliment and at 11/2 you can find a lot worse options than the Dutch.
Scotland to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (15/2 with bet365)
Scotland’s duo of Gary Anderson and Peter Wright have a wealth of experience but limited form.
Both players have struggled in 2022 and 2023 and their lofty price of 15/2 should arguably be higher.
This pairing won the crown back in 2019 and Wright, alongside John Henderson repeated the feat in 2021, but we’re pretty sure the Scots have had their day in this competition.
They are seeded into the second round, but you could argue both players could do with playing themselves into form on the oche.
Germany to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (20/1 with Paddy Power)
On home soil, the Germans are a cracking outsider bet in Frankfurt.
Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler have both run deep into 2023 majors this campaign and will relish the opportunity to play as the hometown heroes.
They have a reasonable group in with Japan and Hong Kong to blow away any cobwebs and will be heavy favourites to win both group matches.
The Germany duo are both inside the top-30 on the Pro Tour averages this season and were good enough to run Germany to the quarter-finals last year.
Australia to win the 2023 World Cup of Darts (20/1 with Paddy Power)
Defending champions Australia are back with the same pairing that saw them scoop the 2022 World Cup of Darts, but 20/1 says they can’t repeat this feat.
Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta provide a healthy blend of experience and fearlessness to go deep again, and they should top Group C in style in company of Gibraltar and Guyana.
Damon Heta won Tuesday’s Players Championship event in Germany so he heads to Frankfurt in very confident mood.
