Defending The Crown

The first of our four clashes takes us to sunny Spain and with a new LaLiga campaign on the horizon, it made sense to see what the defending champions are up to this weekend. That team being Real Madrid and their opening task is a trip to Almeria.

One that sees Los Blancos look to build on their UEFA Super Cup success and with Eintracht Frankfurt offering little in the way of opposition in midweek, promoted Almeria should not offer too much trouble either

Because with last season’s Spanish second tier champions going up against Real Madrid this weekend, there is no doubt they have been given a baptism of fire and now Rubi’s men must work out how to only suffer minimal burns.

With Real Madrid being the dominant force in Spain, the question is not if they win but by what margin and with over 2.5 total goals being priced at odds of 4/7, this is the first pick on my Sunday goals accumulator.

The Roman March

Next up we look at Serie A and with Roma winning last season’s Europa Conference League under the watchful eye of manager Jose Mourinho, he and his players will be tasked with making a genuine fist of winning this season’s Scudetto.

While the group of players that won UEFA’s third level of club competition, has been somewhat improved and with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Gigi Wijnaldum and Paulo Dybala all now calling the Stadio Olimpico home this season, expectations in the Italian capital have certainly risen.

Whether Roma can break the recent monopoly of the San Siro-based duo and keep Juventus at bay remains to be seen. Although with that said, it is shaping up to be one of the most intense title battles for many years.

One that for Roma begins with a trip to Salernitana and with Sunday’s hosts narrowly avoiding relegation last season, I think the Roman’s will put the Stadio Arechi outfit to the sword and there will be a total of over 2.5 goals in the process – an outcome which is priced at odds of 8/11.

Here We Go Again

Last weekend saw a new Bundesliga campaign get underway and if there were any doubts that Bayern Munich had a lost a step after the departure of Robert Lewandowski, those doubts were very quickly removed.

Because although their trip to Eintracht Frankfurt looked rather difficult on paper, Julian Nagelsmann’s men reminded us that football matches are not played on this surface and with a 5-0 halftime lead eventually becoming a 6-1 win, this was Bayern at their brilliant best.

A result that would have made the rest of the Bundesliga wince, as this juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down and this is arguably bad news for Wolfsburg, who themselves travel to the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Although for those looking forward to another Bayern goal bonanza at the weekend, I have a feeling Wolfsburg will be spared ever so slightly and therefore, I have opted for under 3.5 total goals at odds of 11/8.

Brest Is Best

While finally we move on to Ligue 1 and with both Brest and Marseille being in the goals last weekend, I am hoping for more of the same when the two square off at the Stade Francis Le Ble on Sunday.

Then again, Brest will be hoping that their defence is more solid than it was a week before and although they shared five goals with Lens in their opening outing of the season, they gave three of them to the opposition.

While Marseille will look to build on a rather emphatic win last Sunday and after getting the better of Reims by four goals to one, Igor Tudor’s men will look to build on such an impressive showing at the Stade Velodrome.

Which is why I smell goals in the air and if the other trio of picks get over the line, I can play this one rather safe and therefore, I have opted for a rather conservative over 2.5 selection at odds of 8/11.

While if you put all four combinations together, Bet365 are prepared to offer you 10.13/1 in return.
