Winless from their opening two Group A games, United are already playing catch-up, and they can ill afford another slip-up against their Danish opponents.

Although Erik ten Hag’s men warmed up for this clash with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United last weekend where Scott McTominay played a starring role, they have been papering over the cracks.

Copenhagen, meanwhile, may only be a point better off than United, but their league form has been markedly better, and they sit atop the Danish Superliga, rattling home 24 goals from 12 games.

While Casemiro will be unavailable with an ankle knock, Ten Hag will be hoping to shore up the defence with the potential return of Jonny Evans.

This should be a tasty encounter, and to put you in the picture, I have run the rule over the game and thrown up a couple of betting tips for you to mull over.

Man Utd to enjoy home comforts

While United’s decline this term has been alarming given Ten Hag’s relatively successful debut campaign in England, they won’t want to succumb in Europe with barely a whimper.

An exit in the group stages would be unthinkable, but they have a tough task trying to reel in Galatasaray and clinch second spot if we are to assume Bayern Munich will be the runaway leaders and qualify for the Round of 16 as group winners.

Despite the gloom pervading Old Trafford, there are some positive omens, such as United have won six of their eight previous meetings with Danish clubs in Europe, and they are unbeaten in their four clashes at home.

The group game will represent only the second Champions League fixture between United and Copenhagen since the 2006/07 campaign, and on that night, United cantered to a 3-0 victory.

A lot has changed since then, and United will want to pay homage to the late great Sir Bobby Charlton, who died over the weekend, with a statement victory.

Ok, it might not be comfortable, but United should get over the line. Rather than being too bold, I have played it safe and gone with the Red Devils to win & BTTS, which is paying out at 15/8 with William Hill.

Scott McTominay to drag United over the line

There could well be a few intriguing sub-plots that unfold, including whether Rasmus Hojlund, who has largely struggled since joining United, will score against his former employers.

Anyway, McTominay, who has had a jolt in energy over the past month, appears to be primed to make a telling contribution.

Having won over Ten Hag, the Scottish midfield maestro has been in a rich vein of form, netting three times in his past two league outings for United, and his solo strike against the Blades last weekend was sumptuous.

McTominay will want to put his best foot forward again and to round things off, I have gone with McTominay to wrap up the scoring, and he’s at 12/1 to do so with bet365.
