Sunderland to win at PNE – 20/23

Sunderland have had a fantastic debut season in the Championship, despite a lot of things going against them: a lengthy injury list, and the loss of manager Alex Neil to Stoke in August.

The Scot’s departure looked a hinderance for the Black Cats, but in many ways Tony Mowbray looks a better fit for the model with which the Wearsiders are looking to move forward.

Mowbray looks a more flexible tactician than his predecessor, which has allowed him to adapt to circumstance when injuries have forced the boss to think outside the box in both defence and attack.

Plus, his methods are arguably getting more out of some of the club’s prodigious, international talents, who may not have made quite the same progress under Neil.

Sunderland can be extremely proud of their work over the last 12 months whatever Monday holds, but they may get the result they need to apply the heat on Millwall and Coventry.

PNE boss Ryan Lowe was furious with his players after the 4-1 defeat at Sheffield United completed a return of one point from four games, at a stage when the Lilywhites could still have pushed for the Play-Offs.

West Brom to win at Swansea – 5/4

It might seem foolhardy to oppose Swansea, who are among the Championship’s form sides: they’ve taken 20 points from the last 24 available.

A 1-1 draw for Russ Martin’s side at Hull, though, mathematically ended their slim chances of grabbing a Play-Off spot.

The Swans will hope they can take their form into the final day, but the stakes are high for West Brom, who have a chance of breaking into the top six.

Albion need to win, then hope Sunderland and Millwall fail to do so - putting aside, that is, the highly unlikely possibility of extreme goal difference swings in the name of simplicity.

The Baggies came from behind to beat Norwich 2-1 last time out, thanks to Jed Wallace’s winner, and what they have in their favour is a solid spine.

The presence of Alex Palmer in goal is a boost to Carlos Corberan, while Semi Ajayi can bring some aerial dominance to a defence that has missed it at other stages of the season, and Jayson Molumby and Okay Yokuslu is a strong double-pivot in midfield.

Find some individualism from Wallace, John Swift or Brandon Thomas-Asante and West Brom might get the result they need…

Mansfield to win at Colchester – 19/20

Bradford’s defeat at Crewe in midweek means Mansfield still have a slim chance of securing a top seven berth.

The Stags must win at Colchester, hope at least one of Salford or Bradford lose, and that between them and one defeated side from those two, there’s the required goal difference swing.

If the Ammies are defeated by Gillingham, it needs to be a four-goal swing for Nigel Clough’s side to finish in the top seven at their expense, or a three-goal swing in the case of Bradford, who face Leyton Orient.

Unfortunately for the Nottinghamshire outfit, neither opponent have anything to play for, as the Gills are already safe, and Orient have already been crowned champions, so it looks a stretch for the Mansfield miracle to happen.

The only thing they can do is take care of their own business, try to win by two or three goals in Essex, and simply hope for a favour elsewhere.

It was a poor first half from the Stags against Harrogate last week, and they were booed off at half-time, but a quadruple-change at the interval had an impact.

Clough may look to driven midfielder Ollie Clarke, technician George Maris, lively forward Will Swan and the industrious Jordan Bowery to make the same impression from the get-go, to ensure his side at least hold up their own side of the bargain.

Salford to beat Gillingham – 4/9

Anyone who follows Gary Neville on Twitter will know Salford have scored a lot of important late goals in recent weeks.

Crucial goals from Callum Hendry, Matty Lund and Luke Bolton has given the Ammies victories at Wimbledon, Walsall and Carlisle, in a run of four wins in five.

It was a vital run of form from City, who might have been considering the position of Head Coach Neil Wood beforehand.

Having looked outsiders for the top seven previously, Salford now enter the final day in a favourable position, needing only a point against a Gillingham side already safe from relegation to extend their season.

Wood’s side haven’t always looked convincing this season, but they boast one of the best midfielders in the league in Elliot Watt, one of the best wing-backs in Ibou Touray, and one of the best forwards in Hendry.

Stockport to beat Hartlepool – 1/7

Stockport began October as low as 19th, some 11 points off the Play-Offs, but their early season performances had shown lots of promise: and that’s since been backed up by subsequent form, which sends them into the final day with an outside chance of automatic promotion.

The Hatters have ironed out the individual defensive errors that hindered them in the early weeks, and while they’re still often far from clinical in front of goal, they create such a high volume of chances that they’ve almost not needed to be.

If County go into the Play-Offs, they’re hoping key target man Kyle Wootton can return, but the ex-Notts County man’s absence didn’t hold them back in last week’s 3-0 victory at champions Leyton Orient, where Jack Stretton and Isaac Olaofe started up top.

Dave Challinor’s side can be confident of getting the business done against his former club, who’s relegation was confirmed last week, although unfortunately their fate isn’t in their own hands.

Northampton travel to Tranmere and will go up automatically with a win at Prenton Park, but if the Cobblers drop points, Stockport’s superior goal difference puts them in prime position to capitalize.
