Race For Europe

Aimless on the field of play. Aimless off the field of play. That is how you describe Tottenham Hotspur as of late.

Lacking Real Aims

In a week where Ivan Toney has been handed an eight-month ban for betting irregularities, Brentford’s season may have ended a fortnight earlier than planned. That was until Brighton was handed a heavy defeat at the hands of Newcastle.

Admittedly the Bees are very much the outsiders looking in when it comes to European qualification and manager Thomas Frank would certainly accept that statement. However, a positive combination of weekend results would boost the West London outfit’s chances.

With Aston Villa being handed a pair of tricky ties to end the season – a trip to Liverpool and the visit of Brighton, there is a possibility that Unai Emery’s men fail to add any more points to their bank account.

While Brentford’s next mission is a trip across the capital to face an ailing Tottenham side. One that failed to build on their narrow win over Crystal Palace, as last weekend saw them lose 2-1 at Aston Villa.

As things stand, Ryan Mason’s men currently possess the final European invite on offer. They find themselves lying seventh but level on points with Villa and four points clear of Saturday’s opponents Brentford.

The same combination of positive results would also aid Spurs’ bid to end the season on some form of relative high. For a club of their stature, no European football in September and beyond would be almost criminal but criminal is also the best way to describe their recent defending.

As seen many times before, Spurs only turned on the performance when any positive outcome was already out of reach. A 2-1 loss on the road would suggest a tight affair if you did not witness their trip to Villa Park. Sitting down and watching all 90 minutes would tell a different story.

While the biggest story is whether this is Harry Kane’s last ever showing in a Spurs shirt in N17. The contract saga that surrounds him is only picking up more pace and chairman Daniel Levy may soon have a difficult decision to make.

A decision that could have been made easier if Ivan Toney had not been handed an eight-month ban just a few days ago. What could have been Kane’s potential replacement will now be kicking his heels until January 2024.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I am putting all my eggs in the Brentford basket. There is absolutely no reason to back the hosts with their current form, in my opinion the value comes with backing the away win at odds of 3/1.

Tottenham vs Brentford Predictions

While in addition to this, I am going to back a Brentford player to break the deadlock. No Ivan Toney, no problem. Especially when you have Brian Mbeumo leading the line instead and with odds of 10/1 for the Cameroonian to score first, this is also going on my Saturday betting slip.
