We are fast approaching the climax of the current PGA Tour season, and we have a three-legged play-off series to look forward to, starting with the FedEx St Jude Championship.

The top 70 players in the standings (down from 125 last year) have touched down in Memphis, Tennessee, for this event, and the winner will pocket 2,000 points which has been quadrupled compared to 12 months ago.

Rory McIlroy is the reigning FedEx Cup champion, and he will be targeting a record-extending fourth success.

There are a few noticeable absentees, such as Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry, but the FedEx Cup playoffs always make for compelling viewing.

After Sunday, the field will be whittled down to 50 for the BMW Championship, but who will strike the first blow?

I have rummaged through the betting markets and I have picked out a couple of tips for you to ponder over.

Tommy Fleetwood to make the breakthrough

Given his supreme talent, it is amazing that Tommy Fleetwood is still searching for a maiden win on the PGA Tour.

He’s enjoyed a lot of success on the DP World Tour, with six victories, and on the PGA Tour, he’s had a great season to date, chalking up seven top-10 finishes.

The Englishman came in T10 at The Open last month, and he’s had a couple of weeks to recuperate as he’s currently 26th in the FedEx Cup standings.

TPC Southwind plays at a par-70, and while you don’t need to be pinpoint accurate from the tee, the tight greens mean your approach play will have to be spot on to gain some rewards.

Fleetwood, when in full flow, could shoot low, and for my first pick, I have gone with Fleetwood to triumph. If you fancy following up on that, he’s trading at a slightly longer 25/1 with William Hill.

Jon Rahm to get off to a stormer

This has been Jon Rahm’s best season to date in terms of PGA Tour wins (four), and that included the Masters, which was his second Major.

The Spaniard is usually a good front runner, and he has ranked well across key performance metrics — he is second for strokes gained and he is first for birdie average.

Despite being third in the world rankings, Rahm sits atop the FedEx Cup standings, and he will be eager to have a good week at the FedEx St Jude Championship.

The course should suit his game nicely, and while he may not end up winning, he could well catch fire on Thursday.

For my second pick, I have sided with Rahm to be the leader after the first round, and he is priced at 18/1 with bet365 to do so.
