Despite not always garnering the attention it deserves, the Travelers Championship this week will make for compelling viewing for even casual golf viewers of the PGA Tour.
After a stunning maiden Major triumph, Wyndham Clark was the undisputed biggest story of the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club, and the new World No.13 will be looking to make a decent impression.
Of course, a thought must be spared for Clark’s compatriot Rickie Fowler, who shot +5 last weekend to finish fifth, while Rory McIlroy was the runner-up, and the opportunity to land his first Major in nine years slipped out of his grasp.
With a huge prize purse worth over £15million, aside from being a lucrative PGA Tour tournament, the Travelers Championship is also one of the oldest on the calendar.
But who will prevail this week? I have shared some good value odds to consider adding to your betting slips.
Rory McIlroy to clear up at Highlands
Over the past three decades, TPC River Highlands has seen it all. Coming into this tournament, Xander Schauffele is the reigning champion and the man to beat.
Whereas there are others in this glittering field that will have a point to prove. Although he has four Majors to his name to date, and has been in the winners’ circle on 23 occasions, Rory McIlroy has an insatiable appetite to collect more titles.
Of course, there were moments where he could have pressed Clark into more errors and only claimed one birdie in his final round, McIlroy has combined power with accuracy.
The Ulsterman has embodied consistency this year with one win, two runner-up finishes, and seven top-10s in 12 appearances.
And to kick things off, I have gone with McIlroy at an inviting 10/1 with bet365 to take the title this week.
Wyndham Clark to enjoy another productive week
Over the past few years, the Travelers Championship has witnessed some very low scoring. Playing as a par-70, this type of course will prefer those steady players rather than Brooks Koepka or Bryson De Chambeau who just like to bomb it off the tee.
Jim Furyk’s incredible 58 back in 2016 remains the lowest 18-hole score ever posted, and that could take some beating, let alone emulating.
Wyndham Clark may have been an unlikely winner last weekend, and it was tinged with sadness, given his mother died of breast cancer in 2013.
Although Clark will have made some time to enjoy a few post-US Open drinks to mark his achievement and honour his mother’s memory, he seems to be well grounded, and he won’t let things go to his head.
Gaining back-to-back wins on the PGA Tour is a big ask, and while a Major win can affect a player’s performance the following week, I don’t necessarily see that happening with Clark.
I may have put my neck out there, but to complete my tips, I am going with Clark to clinch a top-six finish which is available at 15/2, also with bet365.
