The last Englishman to win The Open was Sir Nick Faldo in 1992 at Muirfield, and while there have been a few near misses since, the Claret Jug remains the most prestigious prize for our finest golfing stars.

Cameron Smith, who is the reigning champion, may court some unwanted attention after his defection to the LIV Tour, while Phil Mickelson will be aiming to lift his second Open title, 10 years after his first one.

Rory McIlroy to break Major drought

For a player of McIlroy’s ilk, it is amazing to think that he has gone nearly 10 years without lifting a Major.

I was fortunate to follow Mcllroy during his final round at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick last weekend, and he looked to be in fabulous form.

He was particularly imperious on the back nine, with his 200-yard stinger at 18 which set up a birdie to deny Robert MacIntyre with a winning total of -15, and that was a highlight of the day.

McIlroy, who clinched back-to-back Rolex Series wins, lifted the Open title at Hoylake the last time it was hosted there in 2014, and it is a course he will have cherished memories of. The Ulsterman is long off the tee, and he will relish making a birdie if not eagle at 5, which is one of the shortest of the three par-5s on the track.

While McIlroy has often built up expectations and failed to deliver in the final rounds of the biggest events, this could be his time. For my first pick, I have gone with McIlroy to collect his fifth Major title which is available at 7/1 with Unibet.

Tyrrell Hatton to fly the flag for England

Although he is perhaps one of the grumpiest players on the PGA Tour, Tyrrell Hatton always provides a few fireworks, and he can go low.

In the co-sanctioned Scottish Open last weekend, Hatton was constantly seen moaning about the wind, although his putter wasn’t always red hot.

Hatton endured a double bogey at the last as his challenge ebbed away, and he had to settle for T6 with a closing score of -9.

But we are all know what he is capable of. And while he might not get his hands on the coveted Claret Jug, he could well be the highest-placed Englishman on the leaderboard.

Brian Harman to muscle his way into the Top 10

While he probably doesn’t always merit the most attention, Brian Harman goes about his business in an efficient manner.

The final round of the Scottish Open was rather unforgettable for the American as he shot a final round of +4 to come home in 12th, but he could well have a productive week at The Open.

He is trending well in some key performance metrics, and he is second on the PGA Tour for bogey avoidance (12.33%).
