The 2023 World Snooker Championship is a matter of weeks away, meaning that the inaugural WST Classic in Leicester offers the perfect opportunity for some of the players on tour to play themselves into form.

Replacing the cancelled Turkish Masters, 128 players head to the baize inside the Morningside Arena looking to bag a share of the £427,000 prize fund.

“Rocket” Ronnie O’Sullivan is the number 1 seeded player with coverage streamed live on Matchroom.Live.

Let’s take a look at our 11/1 shot:

Thepchaiya Un-Nooh -2.5 handicap vs Asjad Iqbal

The “Thai Rocket” is up to number 44 in the world and has his tail up after a final run at the Six-red World Championship.

Un-Nooh also has a semi-final at the Scottish Open under his belt in the 2022-23 season and is a decent outsider in Leicester.

Asjad Iqbal has very little big-tournament experience outside the Snooker Shoot-out and will surely struggle to dent the progression of Un-Nooh.

A -2.5 frame handicap should see the Thai player over the line.

John Higgins -1.5 handicap vs Michael White

John Higgins is back on form having grabbed back-to-back Championship League titles and you can be certain that the Scot is looking to peak around now as the Crucible comes into sight.

He has struggled in the rankings tournaments throughout this season but the four-time world champion can’t be overlooked in his quarter.

His WST Classic campaign starts against Michael White – a player who he enjoys a 17-7 frame aggregate lead over – and a 4-2, 4-1 or 4-0 win looks likely.

Andy Hicks vs James Cahill to go to a deciding frame (Over 6.5 Frames)

Hicks against Cahill is one of the most finely balanced opening round clashes at the WST Classic.

Neither player has pulled up any trees on the tour this season and will be struggling for confidence inside the Morningside Arena.

In a race to four, a deciding frame match is certainly a possibility in a 4-3 thriller.

Matthew Selt to beat Michael Holt

Matthew Selt has won the last two against Michael Holt and enjoys a pretty lofty world ranking of 27.

He ran to the final of the Turkish Masters last year – the tournament replaced by the WST Classic – so his March form can’t be questioned in recent years…

Apart from a decent run at the Snooker Shoot-out, Michael Holt’s form shouldn’t be of concern to Selt.
