ATP Rome Tips
The final Masters 1000 event before Roland Garros takes place in Rome this week. Jannik Sinner makes his much-anticipated return to the court following his three-month doping ban.
Over 100 days have passed since Sinner’s last match, and the Italian only resumed ‘official training activity’ from April 13th. Until then, the world number one was unable to come into contact with professional players.
"The goal remains Paris,” said Sinner when asked about his expectations for the Italian Open. “I came here to see where I stand. I'm not here to beat anyone, but to try to get past the first round and then we'll see what happens.”
Sinner is a marginal favourite ahead of Carlos Alcaraz, who pulled out of the Madrid Open with an adductor injury, plus a separate issue in his left foot. The Spaniard is no longer suffering from those problems but will surely take no chances with his fitness ahead of the French Open.
With doubts over the conditioning of the top two in the market, I’m taking three selections further down the board.
Winner
- Winner: Alexander Zverev (each-way, 2 places)
The stage was set for Alexander Zverev to earn a signature win in Madrid with no Sinner or Alcaraz. It didn’t happen, as Francisco Cerundolo kept up his perfect record against the German and knocked him out in the round of 16.
Still, Zverev could do with making a statement ahead of Roland Garros to boost his confidence as much as anything else. For that reason, he should be at full throttle in Rome, and that makes him worth giving another chance as a headline pick.
An Italian Open winner in 2017 and 2024, Zverev is adept in slower conditions and insists his game is improving after a sluggish start to the season.
Winner
- Winner: Holger Rune (each-way, 2 places)
2023 Italian Open finalist Holger Rune could use some valuable match play in Rome as he builds toward a Grand Slam where he’s considered a legitimate title contender.
The Dane won the ATP 500 event in Barcelona in April but has not won a Masters 1000 match on clay this year and ought to put that right in Rome.
He retired in Monte Carlo due to sickness, and also pulled out in Madrid midway through his opening match, citing a knee problem. Rune is always an injury risk, though he has been in practice over the past few days, first with Sinner and then in Rome with Tomas Martin Etcheverry. There were no signs of any concerns during those sessions.
Rune is in the same section as Jack Draper, who may not be so desperate for another gruelling week after his run to the final in Madrid.
Winner
- Winner: Lorenzo Musetti (each-way, 2 places)
Now a top 10 player for the first time in his career, Lorenzo Musetti is on a steep upward trend, backed up by a run to the final in Monte Carlo and semi-finals in Madrid.
With many others struggling physically and/or keeping half an eye on Roland Garros, Musetti could break through here and ride the wave of his fantastic form to triumph in his home country.
Clay court successes over Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas (twice), and Alex De Minaur (twice) over the last month are not to be sniffed at, and there is no shame in just falling short at both events, as he was competitive in defeats by Alcaraz and Draper.

Tennis Betting Markets
Mastering the different tennis betting markets is key to making the most of your selections. Whether you're backing a tournament favourite or hunting for value in lesser-known markets, knowing where and how to bet gives you a real advantage.
Match Winner
One of the most common strategies is backing the player you think will win a particular match. It's perfect for newcomers and accumulator punters, offering a straightforward way to build your tennis betting strategy.
Correct Score
Predicting the exact set score is a smart move for bigger odds and potentially higher rewards. Correct score betting is ideal for those who study form trends, head-to-head stats, and past matchups between players.
Handicap Betting
Handicap betting sees one player given a head start or deficit in games to even out the match odds. It's a great market to explore for value beyond backing short-priced favourites.
Set Betting
Set betting lets you predict which player will win a specific set. It's a strong option for punters who enjoy live, in-play betting, especially in matches where momentum shifts are expected.
Total Games
Over/under total games markets see you betting on how many total games there will be in a match.
A smart betting strategy often highlights when a match will likely go long or wrap up quickly based on playing styles, surface preference, and player stamina.
Spotting trends like big servers struggling to break each other or dominant players racing through sets can make this market particularly profitable.
Other Tennis Betting Markets
If you're looking for even more ways to find value, these alternative markets offer extra opportunities:
First Set Winner
Backing the First Set Winner market is spotting players who start fast and seize early momentum in a match.
Some players consistently come flying out of the blocks, putting pressure on their opponents from the very first game.
Identifying these quick starters through recent form, head-to-head records, and playing conditions can lead to banking some early profit.
This market is advantageous when betting on matches where one player is known for strong openings but may not always maintain their level across three or five sets.
Outright & Each-Way Betting
Outright and each-way betting focuses on predicting who will be the tournament winner or reach the final of a tournament. These bets can offer outstanding value, particularly before a tournament starts.
Tie-Break Played
This market is ideal when two big servers clash, making breaks of serve unlikely. Betting on a tie-break being played can add an extra layer of excitement to tight matches.
Most Aces
For matches featuring huge servers, betting on who will hit the most aces can be a strong angle. Look for players with dominant serves and a preference for quicker court surfaces.
