Last year in Pennsylvania saw Dustin Johnson win his first major, despite a controversial penalty on the fifth green, eventually taking the title by three strokes. He goes into this week as 7/1 favourite with 888sport to win the US Open, but how do we see this one going?
We take a look at the main contenders for one of the most challenging tournaments of the year…
Dustin Johnson
It’s not exactly been the perfect build up for Dustin Johnson as he heads to Wisconsin to defend his title. He missed the Masters a few months ago after falling down some stairs at his Augusta rental home and it’s off the course that could cost him again.
This time for all the right reasons however. His partner Paulina Gretzky is incredibly close to giving birth. He intends to be at both events, but the world number one could come unstuck if he continues his poor form.
Erin Hills is an unforgiving course and his lack of play on it as well as still in the process of finding form could allow for another contender to take the title.

He remains at 7/1 with 888sport however, and if he can rediscover his game from before injury, he may well be unbeatable once more.
Jason Day
Jason Day has never won the US Open but is consistently one of the best players at the tournament. He’s made the cut in the last five years and has finished top 10 in four of those. He’s 12/1 with Ladbrokes to finally get the title he probably deserves, but it’s not been the best year for him so far.
He’s had off course problems, with his mother sadly suffering from cancer but he’s managed to rediscover a bit of form in recent outings. We certainly expect at least another top-10 finish and we also wouldn’t be surprised if the world number three finally gets his hands on his first major.
Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth won the US Open back in 2015 but failed to produce the same sort of strokeplay the following year.
What Spieth does have going for him this year is that he’s one of the few contenders that has actually played the course before. He was, albeit, a young 18-year-old, but did make it to the Quarter Final of the 2011 US Amateur in that tournament.
He does say he doesn’t remember too much of that tournament, but it will have surely boosted his odds to 12/1.
Spieth is currently ranked fifth in the world and is tipped heavily for this one. He could well be worth a point, particularly with an each way bet.
Rory McIlroy
The Northern Irishman has had a few injury worries of late but he’s determined to set them aside in the US Open this week. McIlroy’s been suffering with a rib injury, keeping him sidelined for six weeks.
Since then he’s finished seventh, fourth and seventh in his returning tournaments and goes into the US Open massively underprepared. On the other hand, he is well rested and odds of 14/1 with most bookmakers for Rory McIlroy to win the US Open look mightily appealing.
He’s been in Wisconsin since Friday and is getting to know the course a lot earlier than his rivals. Will this make the difference? We’ll see who makes the cut by the end of the week…
