Alan Kelly’s Horse Racing Tips for Monday 16th January

Horse racing tips for the meeting at Hereford on Monday afternoon.

With Fontwell undergoing a precautionary inspection at 7.30am for Monday’s card, we head to the meetings at Hereford and Wolverhampton for today’s horse racing tips. The going is expected to ride no worse than soft at the jumps card.

Last week’s run of four winning naps came to an end when Saturday’s selection Ashtown Lad failed to peg back winner Glimpse Of Gala on the Warwick run in. However, we finished the week with a decent profit of £20.70, taking our running total since 1st September to +£189.22 to a £1 level stake.

“Tip of the Day” - Ramo (1.40pm Hereford) - 4/1 with Coral*

Venetia Williams’ unexposed French recruit can put a disappointing effort at Leicester behind him by taking this novices’ handicap hurdle in receipt of plenty of weight from his two main rivals.

1.10pm Hereford, 2m - School For Scandal (Each Way) (Next Best)

A beaten favourite at Warwick on the final day of 2022, the Joe Tickle-trained SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL (e.w.), after being slowly away, was never travelling well enough to get into a prominent position, eventually losing interest to trail home a well beaten eighth of the 13 runners, beaten over fifty lengths.

The mount of David Noonan has produced his best form when racing up with the leaders, as when going down by a neck to fellow rival Greenrock Abbey on his reappearance over today’s course and distance last November.

The eight-year-old has yet to open his account in five attempts over fences but has finished second on three occasions and can finally get his head in front at the main expense of Folly Gate from the Jane Williams stable. The mount of amateur Mr Peter Summers would probably have won at Taunton last month but for unseating his rider at the final fence when a length in front. The gelding is better on good ground however, tipping the balance in favour of School For Scandal.

1.40pm Hereford, 2m 3 1/2f - Ramo (Nap)

An odds on favourite to open his account for the Venetia Williams stable at the second attempt since joining the trainer from France, the previously promising six-year-old RAMO’s 19 length third of the four runners in that Leicester handicap of six weeks ago was simply too bad to be true.

Runner up on his one outing in his native country, the son of Kapgarde was backed into 7/2 from 8/1 to win a Bangor novices’ hurdle on his debut for Williams. And while finishing only fourth, showed plenty of potential for the future. Ramo is worth another chance to show that Leicester run to be all wrong. Off a mark of 98 and with jockey Ned Fox claiming 7lb, the selection can take advantage of the weight he receives from main rivals Missed Tee and Leading Theatre.

The former won a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter on just her second start over hurdles. The form of both of those races looks quite weak however, leaving Harry Skelton’s mount with a potentially stiff task off an opening mark of 109.

4.55pm Wolverhampton, 7f - Meng Tian (Each Way) (Longshot)

Last week’s course and distance winner Jupiter Express ticks plenty of boxes in an effort to follow up just seven days later. The four-year-old son of Kodiac runs off a 1lb lower mark despite winning that apprentice handicap and also has the services of 3lb claiming rider Adam Farragher.

At around opening odds of 3/1 however, I think the Sean Woods-trained MENG TIAN (e.w.) represents better value (each-way) on a course where the Territories gelding has run some of his best races. A winner here last March, Meng Tian wasn’t beaten far on two subsequent attempts at Wolverhampton and the booking of jockey Tom Marquand for the first time is a definite plus.
