Alan Kelly’s Horse Racing Tips for Wednesday 18th January

With the two jumps meetings scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at Newbury and Plumpton looking very doubtful as I write, we head to the all-weather fixtures at Wolverhampton and Southwell for today’s horse racing selections.

“Tip of the Day” - Bascinet (4.37pm Southwell) - 13/8 with bet365*

Eve Johnson Houghton’s charge is fancied to record his third victory within two weeks by taking this amateur jockeys’ handicap under a 5lb penalty.

2.40pm Wolverhampton, 1m 1/2f - Hot Day (Each Way) (Longshot)

Decent recent form is thin on the ground for this modest Class 6 handicap, one exception being last week’s course and distance winner Broughtons Flare, who once again has the services of promising 7lb claimer Billy Loughnane. The seven-year-old has a good chance of following up under a 4lb penalty. But in a race where few can be seriously fancied, the each-way vote goes to top weight HOT DAY (e.w.).

The mount of 5lb claimer Jordan Williams (2 wins from last 18 rides), now runs off a mark 7lb lower than when winning over today’s course and distance 14 months ago, despite running consistently well of late. Fifth of ten at Lingfield ten days ago, the five-year-old was beaten less than two lengths and should appreciate this furlong and a half shorter trip.

3.50pm Wolverhampton, 7f - Politics (Next Best)

There is little doubt that the most promising contender for this seven furlong handicap is Mark Loughnane’s lightly-raced Momaer, the mount of talented 7lb claimer Billy Loughnane. This will be just the fourth career start for the four-year-old and the second on an artificial surface, the first resulting in a narrow victory over favourite Cresta De Vega at Lingfield recently.

The Belardo filly could well have been let in lightly on her handicap debut off a mark of 68 but I just prefer the chance of Michael Appleby’s battle hardened POLITICS who carries a 5lb penalty for the gelding’s comfortable win at Lingfield last week. This will be the 12th all-weather start for Daniel Muscutt’s mount who can record his third victory in just over a month before the handicapper has his say.

4.37pm Southwell, 1m 4f - Bascinet (Nap)

The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained BASCINET will be going for his third victory in less than two weeks following a couple of wins at Chelmsford, and off a mark only 8lb higher than when recording the first of those successes. With rider Miss Imogen Levick taking 7lb off in this amateur jockeys’ handicap, the four-year-old has a great chance of landing the hattrick, with the drop back in trip unlikely to pose a problem for the son of Helmet.

The gelding has proved a model of consistency over the last few months, not finishing out of the first three in seven races, those five defeats coming by small margins. Bascinet seems equally effective over distances ranging from 1m 2f to 2m and can prove too good for Master Grey, the mount of Mr Patrick Millman, and Archie Watson’s top weight Luna Magic.
