Championship Relegation Odds: Plymouth now 9/4 to go down

The 2023/24 Championship campaign comes to a close on Saturday, May 4, with all 24 teams in action at 12:30 pm BST.

At the top of end of the table, Leicester City have already secured the league title, with Leeds United and Ipswich Town still battling for 2nd place.

At the bottom end, meanwhile, Rotherham’s relegation has been confirmed and Huddersfield Town would need to win their final game at least 14-0 to have any chance of staying up - meaning they are already all-but relegated.

With two of the bottom three places already confirmed, the final relegation spot will go to one of four teams. Birmingham City currently occupy 22nd place and are the odds-on favourite to go down this weekend:

  • 19th - Blackburn Rovers Pld 45 - Pts 50 (-16GD)
  • 20th- Sheffield Wednesday Pld 45 - Pts 50 (-26 GD)
  • 21st - Plymouth Pld 45 - Pts 48 (-12GD)
  • ------------------------------------------------------------
  • 22nd - Birmingham City Pld 45 - Pts 47 (-16 GD)

Who will be relegated from the Championship?

Blackburn Rovers

Despite Blackburn Rovers heading into the final gameweek of the season in 19th place, they have a decent chance of going down this weekend.

Blackburn are not in terrible form, drawing two and winning one of their last five, including a 1-0 victory over Leeds United on April 13. Their goal difference is also by no means a concern compared to some of the sides around them.

However, their final game of the campaign sees them travel to Leicester City on Saturday. The Foxes have nothing left to play for this term, so Blackburn are no doubt hoping they will take their foot off the gas pedal when they meet. But if Leicester play anywhere close to their best, a loss for the away outfit is likely.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have done well to pull themselves out of the relegation zone in recent weeks. The Owls have won three and drawn two of their last five league outings.

However, there is still a real chance they go down due to their -26 goal difference. The Yorkshire outfit travel to Sunderland for their final game of 2023/24 and will be hoping for an easy win as the North East side - currently 15th - have nothing on the line on Saturday.

Plymouth

After a bright start to 2023/24, the recently-promoted Plymouth’s season took a serious nosedive midway through the campaign.

They opted to sack their manager earlier this year and saw a brief uptick in form, but back-to-back losses in their last two outings mean Plymouth are only one point above the relegation zone.

As a result, they have to pick up three points this weekend to guarantee survival. That is easier said than done, however, as they face a Hull City team who have to win to stand a chance of securing a play-off spot.

Birmingham City

From play-off push to the bottom three, it has been a season to forget for Birmingham who never really recovered from their poor run under then-manager, Wayne Rooney.

Birmingham occupy the final relegation place ahead of May 4 when they host 5th-place Norwich City. To stay up, the Midlands outfit have to win and hope Plymouth drop points or one of Blackburn or Sheffield Wednesday lose.
